2) THE EXECUTIONER

Those words never fail to give me goosebumps (including right now as I type) and the last stand of Skurge The Executioner is one of the transcendent moments of comics. (If you disagree, I will honestly question whether you’ve read the story. It’s that good.) Writer/artist Walt Simonson had already shown himself to be a master at using Norse mythology to build drama, but Skurge’s last stand took one of the most minor Avengers villains and turned him into a figure of legend. Armed only with Earth weapons and his own indomitable determination, Skurge made certain that the demons of Hel would not cross that final bridge, saving Asgard and the universe…

The Executioner, that was great stuff. Being Nordic myself, I feel this Thor run is probably the best that character will ever get.
