IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

    archie21ARCHIE #21
    Writer: Mark Waid
    Artist: Pete Woods, Jack Morelli
    Publisher: Archie Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A phone call leaves everyone in Riverdale in a state of shock and despair!

STEPHEN: OMG! If Mark Waid is taking this arc where we all think he is taking this arc, half of the Archie Comics fans in the world are going to riot when they reach the last page of this issue. The Over the Edge arc has been great so far, but that final page… oh… that final page.

BM Cv25 ds BM Cv25 open order varBATMAN #25
    Writer: Tom King
    Artist: Mikel Janin
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “The War of Jokes and Riddles” part one! Don’t miss this extra-sized anniversary issue! In his own words, Bruce Wayne narrates a harrowing, never-before-told story of the Dark Knight’s greatest failure…and the horrors it unleashed! In the spirit of YEAR ONE and THE LONG HALLOWEEN, prepare to see a side of Batman you’ve never seen before—get in on the ground floor of a classic Batman epic in the making!

STEPHEN: This feels like the start of a huge event for the Batman series. I’m not a fan of the fact this is a flashback story, but still can’t wait to see where King and Janin take this story.

bill and tedBILL & TED SAVE THE UNIVERSE #1
    Writer: Brian Joines
    Artist: Bachan
    Publisher: BOOM! Studios
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Wyld Stallyns are back, and this time they’re travelling across the whole universe! Bill and Ted have been kidnapped by a bodacious alien and are handed over to…their long-lost family?! Brian Joines and Bachan (Bill & Ted Go To Hell) team up once more for an all-new Bill & Ted adventure.

    MATTHEW: Most Triumphant!

doompatrolDOOM PATROL: THE SILVER AGE OMNIBUS
    Writer: Arnold Drake, Bob Haney
Artist: Bruno Premiani, Bob Brown, Dick Giordano, Sal Trapani
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $99.99
SOLICITATION: The complete Silver Age adventures of the Doom Patrol, comics’ strangest super-team, is collected in a single hardcover! Led by their wheelchair-bound chief, Niles Calder, three outcasts of society-Negative Man, Elasti-Girl and Robotman-take the qualities that made them freaks to become heroes. Together, the trio takes on bizarre menaces including General Immortus, The Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man and The Brotherhood of Evil! Collects MY GREATEST ADVENTURE #80-85 and DOOM PATROL #86-124.

MATTHEW: The Omnibus editions may have a steep price tag, but they are totally worth it, and The Silver Age Doom Patrol is nuts in all the right ways.

nancy drewNANCY DREW HARDY BOYS #4
    Writer: Anthony Del Col
    Artist: Werther Dell’Edera
    Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Who can you really trust? Now on the inside of the Rover gang that runs Bayport’s criminal world, Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys turn to a black sheep brother to guide them through it all. But as they put together a sting operation, are they the ones that will be stung?

CHRIS: Much like Afterlife with Archie, this comic surprised me with how good it is. I know next to nothing about Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys, but this book tells such a great story it doesn’t matter. Fun and original stuff.

STEPHEN: This is a great, great series, and I can’t get enough of it. Enough of a nod to the classic characters, but not too over the top to make the grumpy people find yet another reason to complain. This is definitely my pick of the week!

occupy avengersOCCUPY AVENGERS TP VOL 01 TAKING BACK JUSTICE
    Writer: David Walker, Roy Thomas
    Artist: Carlos Pacheco, John Buscema
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $17.99
SOLICITATION: Super heroes – they’re a privileged class. Doing what they want, when they want, and never facing the consequences. They have no regard for the ordinary people left behind to suffer in their wake. Who will stand up for the little guy? Clint Barton, the original Hawkeye, will! Clint doesn’t look for trouble, but trouble keeps finding him – and he’ll quickly drag Red Wolf and Nighthawk into his street-level heroics, as well! But what happens when Nick Fury – the original Nick Fury – arrives on the scene? Isn’t he dead? If so, someone who looks a lot like him is out to kill Clint and his renegade team! What’s going on, and can Clint keep his eye on the ball while dealing with spymasters and sabotage?

MATTHEW: This series is one that I wish I’d have gotten in on from the ground floor, but this way you can get the collected story in the hopes that the series will continue…

    plasticPLASTIC #3
    Writer: Doug Wagner
    Artist: Daniel Hillyard
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: With a new girl along for the ride (who, surprisingly, is an actual living, breathing person), Edwyn continues his head-chopping rampage to save the love of his life…but the Dixie Mafia have some rather devious plans of their own.

CHRIS: A retired hitman forced to kill in order to save the woman he loves. Who happens to be a sex doll. Twisted, gruesome and bizarre. And I love it!

    shirtlessbearfighterSHIRTLESS BEAR-FIGHTER #1
    Writer: Jody LeHeup, Sebastian Girner
    Artist: Nil Vendrell
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: After being betrayed by the bears that raised him, the legendary Shirtless Bear-Fighter wanders the forest he’s sworn to protect, fistfighting bears, eating flapjacks, and being the angriest man the world has ever known!
When wild-eyed, super-strong bears attack the citizens of Major City, Shirtless ventures into the human world to do what he does best…PUNCH THOSE BEARS IN THE FACE! But all is not as it seems. Someone is manipulating Shirtless…and only by confronting the demons of his past can Shirtless hope to save his future!
A heart-filled, hilarious, tall tale for the ages… you don’t want to miss SHIRTLESS BEAR-FIGHTER!

CHRIS: I mean, the title says it all doesn’t it?
