It’s a common refrain among those who take things literally, at the most basic face value: The Avengers don’t actually do much in the way of avenging. The Defenders have a slightly better shot at literally living up to their group designation, thanks to the name being a bit more vague. Nearly all superhero-type activities involve defending one thing or another, and as for The Champions, they’re super-hip in that way that only a group of teens created by men in their forties can be. Still, whether Avenger, Defender or Champion, they’re part of pop culture, which means we get to snarkily assess them as characters and symbols, leading to today’s definitional query…
The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) doesn’t want to discuss what team is more popular, cooler or has the hottest co-workers, but instead the literal meaning of their names, asking: What would you choose as your super-team affiliation: Avenger, Defender Or Champion?

Avengers. I’ve seen that they get credit cards and government jobs.
Avengers, solely for the fact I already have an Avengers ID card (came with a special issue of Wizard in the mid/late 90’s). Also have a JLA ID card from another promo they had, so I’m set for the big two universes.
Fantastic Four, thank you very much!
As you ask, solely based on the meaning of the word in the name, I’d be a Defender first and foremost. Potentially that could lead me to become a Champion at what I do, and I suppose that’d be okay, but if I became an Avenger then that would mean that I failed to do my job.
NEW Defenders from 1983 since New Warriors and Power Pack are not options.
New Warriors is always the right answer.
Ultimates. Every other team is junior league.
New Teen Titans (I’am 43 but act 5 according to my wife. I think that balances out.)
Defender, because I wouldn’t want to be part of a team that would have me as a member.
