Major Spoilers Question of the Day: Jocularity Edition

Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonMay 3, 20176 Comments1 Min Read

If you want to giggle, just imagine Otter Disaster doing an impersonation of Colonel Potter doing an impersonation of Hot Lips Houlihan doing an impersonation of Father Mulcahy saying “Jocularity!”  I know that I still laugh every time I think about it, and it’s not just because Bruce has a great Harry Morgan voice.  Indeed, though I have a lot of shows I consider hilarious (‘Scrubs’ is a hoot, even when it’s being self-indulgent, ‘How I Met Your Mother’ has laughs galore, and I will not pass up ‘Gilligan’s Island’ if I encounter it on cable), the docs of the 4077th bring the funny over and over, leading to today’s chortling query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) would have to recognize ‘M*A*S*H’ to be one of the most consistently funny shows of all time, asking: What television program is the funniest, the most entertaining, the most capable of creating the proverbial jocularity?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

For me, it is a tie between “Futurama” and “Mystery Science Theater 3000”. Both series do not have a single episode I find unenjoyable or unfunny, and they are both guaranteed to bring my mood up even when I’m at my worst. Both series are also programs that I have to be careful if I plan to eat or drink as I watch as I am prone to choking as I am swallowing something because it makes me laugh so hard, even if I’ve seen the episode or just the joke a hundred times before.

Its hard to say, but one of the funniest I can remember was The Fast Show. Its a British comedy from the 90’s.

I still have to see series 5 from 2011 and the two episodes made for the BBC Two 50th Anniversary event. That show was hilarious!

The Shelley Long episodes of Cheers. Then Blackadder, MST3K, Wanted Dead or Alive, first 3 seasons of MASH, Dick Van Dyke Show to fill out the top five. Of course, none of them make me laugh any more. Watched them too many times.

        DANGIT!

        I forgot Absolutely Fabulous!!

Also, the episode Matthew mentioned, Movie Tonight, is my favorite episode of MASH, even though it’s not a Trapper episode. So I am flexlible even on my own rules. Roseanne was awesome for about five years, too.

Also, all episodes of MASH without the laugh track are better. Look for them in the season DVDs that offer them. Caio!
