IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

ANNO DRACULA 1895: SEVEN DAYS IN MAYHEM #1ANNO DRACULA #1
    Writer: Kim Newman
    Artist: Paul McCaffrey
    Publisher: Titan Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: 1895. Prince Dracula has ruled Great Britain for ten years, spreading vampirism through every level of society. On the eve of Dracula’s Jubilee, radical forces gather to oppose the tyrant. Kate Reed, vampire journalist and free-thinker, takes a seat on the revolutionary Council of Seven Days, though she learns that the anarchist group harbors a traitor in its midst. The Grey Men, Dracula’s dreaded secret police, have been ordered to quash all resistance to the rule of the arch-vampire. With intrigue on all sides, the scene is set for an explosive addition to the Anno Dracula series.

STEPHEN: I know nothing about the world of Anno Dracula, but this issue was really interesting. If you are an alternate history buff or want to read about a world where Dracula controls the British Empire, this is a must read.

    ACTION COMICS #976
    Writer: Dan Jurgens
    Artist: Doug Mahnke, Jaime Mendoza
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “SUPERMAN REBORN” finale! As this epic tale wraps up, Superman’s life is drastically changed…and that’s all we are saying for now-except that you won’t want to miss it! The covers by Patrick Gleason and Mick Gray and the variant covers by Gary Frank for SUPERMAN #18-19 and ACTION COMICS #975-976 will connect to form a single vertical image.

MATTHEW: Superman’s been getting weird, which is my favorite kind of Supreman.

STEPHEN: You know who is back, and that is making for a trippy weird Superman tale. So… check this out.

    DETECTIVE COMICS #953
    Writer: James Tynion IV
    Artist: Christian Duce

Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “League Of Shadows” part four! Help arrives from a surprising — and unwanted — source… one of Batman’s greatest foes!

WAYNE: Terrific comic each time I read it! Don’t miss this highly recommended comic!

    DOOM PATROL #5
    Writer: Gerard Way
    Artist: Nick Derington
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The team is back together at last, though why they are back together remains an unanswered riddle. After the mind- blowing revelations of the previous issues, Casey Brinke has to figure out what this all means going forward. Or maybe it’s just the end of everything after all? Plus, Robotman punches stuff!

CHRIS: Man has it been a long time since the last issue came out! It’s good to see it finally back. Gerard Way and Nick Derington have been killing it on Doom Patrol. It’s the best the title has been since Grant Morrison wrote it back in the day. Plus, you can still find the other four issues, so it’s not too late to jump on!

    THE FLASH #19
    Writer: Joshua Williamson
    Artist: Jesus Merino

Publisher: DC Comics

Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “SINS OF THE FATHER” finale! Wally’s quest for knowledge about his villainous father takes him and Barry Allen to the Australian outback and into the debt of Captain Boomerang, one of The Flash’s oldest enemies and the last person to see Wally’s father, Reverse-Flash, alive.

WAYNE: I’m really enjoying this book! Excellent each issue!

HAL JORDAN AND THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS #17
    Writer: Robert Venditti
    Artist: Ethan Van Sciver
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “QUEST FOR THE BLUE LANTERNS” finale! As both the torchbearer of the Green Lantern Corps and the White Lantern of life, Kyle Rayner’s proved he can wield the entire emotional spectrum. But when forced to choose, which ring will he don – and which Corps will he join for the oncoming threats facing all of time and space?

WAYNE: Great GL stories! Be sure to pick this conclusion up!

    IRON FIST #1
    Writer: Ed Brisson
    Artist: Mike Perkins
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: K’un Lun is in ruins. The chi fueling Danny’s fists is wavering. Is there a future for the Iron Fist? Danny Rand pushes himself to the breaking point, finding fights to prove his worth. But a bigger fight than he can handle may have found him…

MATTHEW: Early reports on his Netflix show haven’t been encouraging, but I’m still a fan of Daniel Rand and his 70s kung-fu foolishness. Here’s hoping that this book is awesome, even if the show might be polarizing.

    MOTHER PANIC #5
    Writer: Jody Houser
    Artist: Shawn Crystal
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: While hunting a new target, Mother Panic may have found her first ally in the strange and enigmatic Pretty. But nothing involving Gather House is ever what it appears to be. Can Pretty really be trusted? And what exactly is going on in Violet Paige’s basement?

CHRIS: Mother Panic is another of my favorite Young Animal comics. It’s very close to being a “Bat-book” but is far enough removed that it is its own thing. The protagonist is a female and possibly crazier than Batman. Those two things alone make this a must read for me.

    OPTIMUS PRIME #5
    Writer: John Barber
    Artist: Kei Zama
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: NEW CYBERTRON! It’s battleground: Earth once more, as the uneasy peace between Optimus’ forces, the Junkions, and G.I. Joe collapses amidst betrayals and subterfuge. Will Optimus Prime and Pyra Magna be able to put aside their differences-or is war really the only way forward?

CHRIS: Another Transformers title that continues to break new ground. This issue is packed with brutal robot killings, a great new take on Wreck-Gar and Sharkticons! Anybody can enjoy this comic too, not just Transformers fans.

TRANSFORMERS VS G.I. JOE MOVIE ADAPTATION
    Writer: Tom Scioli
    Artist: Tom Scioli
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: Imagine a world where the greatest comic book crossover of all time inspires a movie adaptation… and that movie adaptation inspires its own comic book! Visionary writer-artist Tom Scioli returns to the weird world of Transformers vs. G.I. Joe and brings an even weirder twist to this new story: what would the comic book adaptation of the movie version of the comic book look like? It’s time to find out in the most epic, scintillating, off-the-wall, exciting comic of 2017!

MATTHEW: An adaptation of a movie that doesn’t exist? I’m in, especially if it goes full-on 80s animation on us.

WILL EISNER’S THE SPIRIT: CORPSEMAKER #2
    Writer: Francesco Francavilla
    Artist: Francesco Francavilla
    Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: It started like a very ordinary investigative case for the Spirit, but just when he seemed to have it all figured out, the tale took an unexpected turn to reveal a larger criminal plan at work. Will Danny Colt find a way out or will this end up with a BANG?

STEPHEN: The Spirit? Francesco Francavilla? SOLD! Buy this book, not only do you get a Spirit tale that feels like a Spirit tale, but the art is fantastic.
