IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

    ACTION COMICS #975
    Writer: Dan Jurgens
    Artists: Jaime Mendoza, Doug Mahnke
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “SUPERMAN REBORN” part two! Celebrating our 975th issue with a supersize special as another layer of the Superman/Clark Kent mystery is exposed! And in a backup story written by Paul Dini with art by Ian Churchill, learn what it all means for the Son of Superman, who is the prize in a deadly game!

STEPHEN: The secret of Clark Kent is revealed, and it is kind of a game changer – especially when we try to figure out what has happened to Chris Kent. Definitely a new direction for Superman as he is “reborn” this week in Action Comics #975.

    DETECTIVE COMICS #952
    Writer: James Tynion IV
    Artist: Christian Duce
    Publisher: DC Comics

Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “League of Shadows” part three! Batman’s team faces the League of Shadows, which believes in only one thing: complete and utter destruction! The League’s plan for the city is revealed… but can even that secret compare to the bombshell that is the identity of Cassandra Cain’s mother?

WAYNE: Is it time to enter this title in the Batman Hall of Fame right next to any Scott Snyder Batman comic? I think so! Great book, every time!

    THE FLASH #17
    Writer: Joshua Williamson
    Artist: Neil Googe

Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99

SOLICITATION: “SINS OF THE FATHER” part one! With his superhero career finally underway, Wally West must learn the truth about his father, Daniel West, the long-lost villain known as Reverse-Flash. To retrace his steps, Kid Flash and The Flash must travel to the most dangerous place in the DC Universe: Belle Reve Prison!

WAYNE: The Flash is back, and how! Don’t miss this highly recommended comic!

HAL JORDAN AND THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS #16
    Writer: Robert Venditti
    Artist: Rafael Sandoval, Jordi Tarragona
    Publisher: DC Comics

Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “QUEST FOR THE BLUE LANTERNS” part three! Guy Gardner sets out on a one-man mission to take out the one Sinestro Corps ring slinger everyone’s afraid of: Arkillo! Can this Green Lantern with a grudge take down this monstrous alien and prove he’s still the toughest guy in the cosmos to carry a power battery? As Guy’s hope for a fair fight wanes, Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner streak across the galaxy in a last-ditch effort to find Saint Walker of the Blue Lanterns and ensure that the blue light of hope isn’t extinguished.

WAYNE: Hal Jordan is flying high! Enjoy this book as well!

    MAN-THING #1
    Writer: R.L. Stine
    Artist: German Peralta, Daniel Johnson
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Beloved writer R.L. STINE (Goosebumps, Fear Street) brings his special brand of horror to MAN-THING! After working for years, MAN-THING has regained his ability to speak and has taken Hollywood by storm…But when an ancient and mysterious danger threatens the swamp, Man-Thing is going to have to choose between his new life and celebrity, and the world he used to call home…
PLUS! A bone-chilling new horror story, written by the master himself, R.L. STINE, and illustrated by the incomparable Daniel Warren Johnson!

MATTHEW: I’m never gonna turn down an issue of Man-Thing, and the creator of Goosebumps getting involved makes this one doubly interesting to me…

NANCY DREW AND THE HARDY BOYS: THE BIG LIE #1
    Writer: Anthony Del Col
    Artist: Werther Dell’Edera
    Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: THE BIG LIE is a Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys mystery unlike any other you’ve ever read… When the teenage brothers Frank and Joe Hardy are accused of the murder of their father – a detective in the small resort town of Bayport – they must team up with the femme fatale Nancy Drew to prove their innocence (and find the real guilty party in the process) in a twisting, hard-boiled tale, complete with double-crosses, deceit and dames. Inspired by new crime classics like Ed Brubaker’s Fatale and Darwyn Cooke’s Parker series, writer Anthony Del Col (Assassin’s Creed, Kill Shakespeare) and artist Werther Dell’Edera (Batman: Detective Comics, House of Mystery) bring the iconic teen detectives into the modern age, and redefine noir for a new generation of readers!

STEPHEN: OMG Y’all! When this was originally solicited, I had no hope this would be good – thinking it would be another “mature readers” take on classic characters. I was so wrong. You will definitely want to run and pick Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys: The Big Lie #1 today as it is so good. 5 Stars good. Get it. You’re welcome.

    REGGIE AND ME #3
    Writer: Tom DeFalco
    Artist: Sandy Jarrell
    Publisher: Archie Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: In the third installment of this five-issue miniseries, everyone thinks they know Big Moose. They’re wrong. Determined to rid himself of both Moose and Archie, Reggie exploits his new “friendship” with the big guy to learn, “The Secret Life of Moose Mason!” Reggie uncovers surprising truths about Moose’s family and his troubled past. He discovers the real reason why Midge is so devoted to Moose. He exposes the big guy’s hopes, dreams and fears. Teemed with his beloved dog Vader, Reggie begins to plant the seeds that will eventually lead to Moose and Archie’s expulsion from Riverdale High.

MATTHEW: I was seriously impressed with issue #1 of this book. I shouldn’t have been surprised, what with Archie hitting so many excellent notes lately, but it’s Reggie and he is The Worst.

    SILVER SURFER #1
    Writer: Dan Slott
    Artist: Mike Allred
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The world of Inkandesha is hauntingly beautiful, filled with cities of solid light and populated by living holographic people. But there’s one tiny thing the people of this world probably should’ve told the Silver Surfer and Dawn before they decided to pop in for a visit…they might have a problem getting their physical bodies back.

MATTHEW: Silver Surfer is one of the best, most consistent books on the market. You should be reading it.
