IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

BACK TO THE FUTURE: BIFF TO THE FUTURE #1
    Writer: Bob Gale, Derk Fridolfs
    Artist: Alan Robinson
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: When Old Biff Tannen travels to the past to give his younger self the Grays Sports Almanac, he opens a lethal Pandora’s Box that drastically changes the course of history. In the BTTF movies, Doc and Marty save the day — but what happens in Biff Tannen’s dystopia before they do? Find out in BIFF TO THE FUTURE, the alternate life story of Biff Tannen detailing his diabolical rise to power, his dangerous relationship with the McFly family and Doc Brown, and his ultimate demise. The apocalypse has got nothing on the kinds of trouble a Tannen can make! Written by BTTF co-creator Bob Gale with Derek Fridolfs (Batman) and illustrated by Alan Robinson (BTTF: Citizen Brown).

MATTHEW: The creator of the franchise being involved makes these comic adventures feel somehow more authentic, and they’ve been really fun reads. I kind of want to see how Biff gets set up so that he can be taken down…

STEPHEN: I really hate Biff Tannen, but this is a time travel story that shows us how an alternate timeline comes into being, so I’m grabbing this one!

    DETECTIVE COMICS #949
Writer: James Tynion IV, Marguerite Bennett
    Artist: Ben Oliver
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “BATWOMAN BEGINS” part two! This special two-part interlude spotlights team leader Batwoman! Batman and Batwoman need to get in there to find out who’s been weaponizing monster blood-but who will they have to fight through to do it?

WAYNE: This issue continues to prepare us for Batwoman’s upcoming ongoing series. Given the creative team, I’m all in!

    FUTURE QUEST #9
    Writer: Jeff Parker
    Artist: Ron Randall
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The future looks dark! In this issue, Omnikron, ravager of worlds, is loose in Los Angeles-and only the Impossibles stand in the creature’s way! Then, Mightor and Birdman take a very unfortunate shortcut that may never bring them back to Earth. Plus, Dr. Zin’s deeds come back to haunt him as he and Dr. Quest try to escape from F.E.A.R.’s underground base…is their last, best hope a bunch of kids and a robot without a brain?

WAYNE: This series continues to sparkle, and has apparently already inspired more like it. Can you say Future Quest II? I know you can!

HELLBOY WINTER SPECIAL 2017 ONE SHOT
Writer: Mike Mignola, Chris Roberson, Scott Allie
Artist: Paul Grist, Christopher Mitten, Sebastian Fiumara
    Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLiCITATION: Three weird tales show the world of Hellboy through the years, with Edward Grey appearing alongside Sarah Jewell, hero of the recent Rise of the Black Flame series in 1890s London. In 1980s New England, Hellboy, Abe Sapien, and Liz Sherman set out on a simple search for some missing kids and encounter a tormented spirit seeking to share its pain.

And Paul Grist (Kane, Jack Staff) joins the team for a 1950s Hellboy story providing a glimpse of the next new title to debut in the Mignolaverse.

STEPHEN: HELLBOY! MIGNOLA HELLBOY! Plus the return of Sarah Jewell. Though it is an anthology, I can’t get enough Hellboy and company, so this is definitely a must buy for me this week.

    JUSTICE LEAGUE SUICIDE SQUAD #6
    Writer: Joshua Williamson
    Artist: Howard Porter
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Legendary JLA artist Howard Porter returns for the ultimate showdown between the Suicide Squad, the Justice League and the forces of [REDACTED]. Unlikely heroes emerge from the rubble of DC’s first major event since DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH, leaving both teams in a place they’ve never been before…and setting the stage for the all-new JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA.

WAYNE: Never mind that “redacted” stuff! This team-up has been one of the very best in years, in my opinion! I hope you’ve been keeping up with it! Highly recommended!

    KAMANDI CHALLENGE #1
    Writer: Dan Abnett, Dan DiDio
Artist: Dale Eaglesham, Keith Giffen, Scott Koblish (CA) Bruce Timm
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: Prepare to take part in one of the greatest adventures from the infinite future of the DC Universe, and join the industry’s top creative teams in a round-robin, no-holds-barred, storytelling extravaganza titled THE KAMANDI CHALLENGE! Born from the mind of Jack “King” Kirby, the post apocalyptic Earth of Kamandi has been a fan favorite for decades, and now 14 intrepid teams of writers and artists build on this incredible foundation and take the title character on an epic quest to find his long-lost parents and travel to places seen and unseen in the DC Universe.

Each issue will end with an unimaginable cliffhanger, and it’s up to the next creative team to resolve it before creating their own. It’s a challenge worthy of “The King” himself! In this premiere issue, the Last Boy on Earth is dragged from his safe haven by a group of tigers, only to face the nightmarish threat of the ultimate weapon!

MATTHEW: Being just old enough to remember the original DC Challenge, I’m super-geeked to see what this might turn into. Part of me is hoping for a glorious mess, so fingers crossed!

    POWER RANGERS: PINK #6
Writer: Brendan Fletcher, Kelly Thompson, Tini Howard
    Artist: Daniele Di Nicuolo
    Publisher: BOOM! Studios
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Final issue! Are Kimberly, Trini, and Zack ready to leave behind the life of a Ranger once more? What does this mean for Tommy and Kimberly?

MATTHEW: Kimberly has been searching for new Rangers, and it’s been weirdly fascinating. It’s the Power Rangers story I didn’t know that I wanted and that’s cool!
