Major Spoilers Question of the Day: Change Is Bad Edition

Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonDecember 16, 20167 Comments1 Min Read

Sometimes it’s tough to be a fan.  To be fair, there’s a lot of moments in comics, movies and such that make me want to leap up and slap the taste out of people’s mouths, but there is also a lot of unwarranted negativity in fandom.  Then again, it is incredibly frustrating to try to figure out the timelines of Cyclops’ and Marvel Girl’s romance or which back story actually applies to the Trill race on ‘Star Trek’, but it’s nothing compared to the mid-season actor change on ‘Bewitched’ for sheer ‘Change is bad.’  And don’t even get me started on whether or not vampires in ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ need to breathe or not, leading us to today’s alternate-reality query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) still doesn’t know how many kids Blanche had on ‘The Golden Girls’, asking: What alterations to your favorite pop culture most made you think that change is bad?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

Highlander 2 and that whole alien retcon mess instead of just being normal Earth people with immortality. Even the director’s cut that eliminated all that nonsense is still pretty bad. And the less said about Highlander: The Source and what it did to retcon the franchise, the better.

Almost every time modern Hollywood makes a “reimagination” of older film or TV show.

I’m stumped on this one. There are so many examples of bad remakes that it’s hard to pick one.

I was very displeased when the Legion went from the 5 year gap to the Archie Legion.

Yes, and I was even more irritated by the Threeboot.

Tean Titans was actually fun. there was limited story line, and character development. and then came Tean Titans Go… Dear gods, there is no hope for the human race.

I actually didn’t mind the Darren replacement, they did a good job of limiting Yorks screen time in the season before he left so when Sargent took over it wasn’t so jarring… plus they are both named Dick so it was only a half a change :) Loved the scene in Roseanne after they replaced Becky and they were watching Bewitched and the “new” Becky saying she preferred the new Darren! :D

Think mine was the addition of midichlorians… yikes, take out the mystery/fantasy why don’t you :\
