IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
BATMAN #10
Writer: Tom King
Artist: Michael Janin
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “I am Suicide,” part two! Batman now has his team, but are they ready for the most dangerous mission of their lives? As the Dark Knight prepares his squad to infiltrate Santa Prisca, he may find that it’s up to him alone to face Bane.
WAYNE: These folks are really doing Batman proud, so I highly recommend this title!
CYBORG #4
Writer: John Semper Jr.
Artist: Timothy Green, Joseph Silver
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: THE IMITATION OF LIFE” part five! Cyborg loses control of his robotic form when it begins attacking his friends and family at S.T.A.R. Labs. Trapped in a virtual maze of ominous visions and forgotten memories, can Vic Stone hack his way through the cybernetic gauntlet that is his own mind?
WAYNE: Is Cyborg really human? I love that this comic is exploring a very Star Trek-like premise, and can’t wait for this issue!
DEATH OF HAWKMAN #2 of 5
Writer: Mark Andreyko
Artist: John Livesay, Aaron Lopresti
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITITATION: Imprisoned on Rann and accused of being a spy for the enemy Thanagarians, Adam Strange finds a most unusual ally in his rescuer, Hawkman, who knows his people are innocent of the recent devastating attack on Rann and is desperately searching for the truth of who began this conflict…and why!
WAYNE: I’ve always been a big fan of Hawkman, so I hope he really doesn’t die. I am enjoying the story and seeing Katar Hol flying high again. Terrific stuff!
JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS #2
Writers: Marguerite Bennett and Cameron Deordio
Artists: Audrey Mok, Kelly Fitzpatrick, Jack Morelli
Publisher: Archie Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: As the girls look to play their first gig outside Riverdale, they run into some unexpected complications. Can they bust up a crime ring, help the criminals see the error of their ways, and jump-start the band’s music career—all through the power of rock, friendship, and, Melody assures us, entirely legitimate comic book science? You’ll have to read to find out!
STEPHEN: This is an interesting series, and there is something special going on. I don’t know if this will be as big a series as Mark Waid’s take on Archie, but it is good enough that it’s on my pull list again this month.
MAYDAY #1
Writer:Alex de Campi
Artist: Tony Parker, Blond
Publisher: Image
Cover Price: 3.99
SOLICITATION: SERIES PREMIERE A Cold War action-thriller like no other. It’s 1971, and two young Soviet operatives are sent to California to kill a defector and recover top-secret information. As the mission falls apart into a mess of good sex, bad drugs, and ugly violence, the young Russians are faced with a dilemma: they need to rely on each other to escape America, but they must betray each other to survive Russia. By critically-acclaimed thriller writer ALEX DE CAMPI with art by TONY PARKER and BLOND. – See more at: https://imagecomics.com/comics/releases/mayday-1#sthash.HmMeelEV.dpuf
RODRIGO: I wonder when that turning point was. When did Americans start finding stories about sympathetic Russians during the cold war appealing?
MUHAMMAD ALI HC
Writer: Sybille Titeux
Artist: Amazing Ameziane
Publisher: Dark Horse
Cover Price: 19.99
SOLICITATION: The story of boxing icon Muhammad Ali!
An original graphic novel celebrating the life of the glorious athlete who metamorphosed from Cassius Clay to become a three-time heavyweight boxing legend, activist, and provocateur: Muhammad Ali. Not only a titan in the world of sports but in the world itself, he dared to be different and to challenge and defy through his refusal to be drafted to fight in Vietnam, his rejection of his “slave” name, and ultimately his final fight with his body itself through a thirty-year battle with Parkinson’s disease. Witness what made Ali different, what made him cool, what made him the Greatest.
RODRIGO: $20 for this hardcover seems like a steal. Especially given what I’ve seen of Amazing Ameziane’s art.
RISE OF THE BLACK FLAME #3
Writer: Mike Mignola, Chris Roberson
Artist: Christopher Mitten
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: In an ancient temple lost deep in the jungle, the heroes find proof of the rumored human sacrifices and answers about the Cult of the Black Flame.
STEPHEN: Such a great pulpy tale, and I can really see this series becoming the next B.P.R.D. of the Victorian Era. If you love your Hellboy and Mignola-verse creations, this is a book to pick up this week.
THE UNWORTHY THOR #1
Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist: Olivier Coipel
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Odinson’s desperate search to regain his worthiness has taken him out into the cosmos, where he’s learned of the existence of a mysterious other Mjolnir. This weapon of unimaginable power, a relic from a dead universe, is the key to Odinson’s redemption — but some of the greatest villains of the Marvel Universe are now anxious to get their hands on it as well. Can The Odinson reclaim his honor, or will the power of thunder be wielded for evil? The quest for the hammer begins here.
RODRIGO: Man, so conflicted about this one. “Another Mjolnir” sounds terrible, right? But this is a good concept in general. Am I going to get back into Marvel comics?
