IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

    batman9coverBATMAN #9
    Writer: Tom King
    Artist: Michael Janin

Publisher: DC Comics

Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “I Am Suicide” part one! Batman has always been crazy…but this? This is suicide! In order to retrieve Psycho-Pirate and save Gotham Girl, Batman must recruit a team from Amanda Waller to break into the most impenetrable prison in the world and steal from one of the Dark Knight’s greatest foes…Bane. The next great Batman story begins here!

WAYNE: Things are really percolating in this book, so if you’re a Bat-fan, be sure to buy it!

    cavecarson_1CAVE CARSON HAS A CYBERNETIC EYE #1

    Writer: Jon Rivera, Gerard Way
    Artist: Michael Avon Oeming
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Cave Carson has done it all: survived countless adventures below the Earth’s surface, met the love of his life, and gotten a cybernetic eye…somehow. After he and his wife, Eileen, sent their only daughter Chloe off to college, Cave was ready to become just another mundane member of the surface world. That is, until Eileen got sick. Newly widowed, Cave tries to piece his life back together when a knock on the door of his secret underground lab pulls him back into a past that he and Eileen thought they had left buried deep within the Earth.

ROB: I mostly just picked this for the title, which is great. However, premise sounds interesting and I’ve enjoyed the creators’ prior works, so let’s give it a go, shall we.

    deadpool-too-soon-1DEADPOOL TOO SOON #1 (of 4)
    Writer: Joshua Corin
    Artist: Todd Nauck
    Publisher: Marvel
    Cover Price: $4.99 USD
SOLICITATION: SOMEONE HAS MURDERED FORBUSH MAN! Could someone be targeting all of Marvel’s funniest characters for death? That’s what Deadpool thinks, and now he’s gotta act before someone bumps off SQUIRREL GIRL, ROCKET RACCOON, GROOT, ANT-MAN, HOWARD THE DUCK and THE PUNISHER! (Like we said, the funny characters.) Good thing Deadpool is renowned for his investigative skills!

ETIENNE: Hang on, how many limited series is Deadpool in right now? 4? 5? Who cares, its Deadpool, give me more! I personally am not a fan of ‘joke’ characters in a serious universe. I like funny comics and funny characters, but either in their own universe, or in a shared universe where the joke is on the character, not the rest of the world. So frankly, I want to read this and watch Deadpool fail, let all those stupid annoying unfunny characters die in horrible ways. But perhaps I am taking this a bit too seriously?

ROB: I’m always happy to see the ridiculous, and this Deadpool story sounds about as ridiculous as it can get. Looking to have some fun here.

dirkgently_salmonofdoubt_01-1DIRK GENTLY: THE SALMON OF DOUBT #1
    Writer: Arvind Ethan David
    Artist: Ilias Kyriazis
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Dirk Gently, created by Douglas Adams and shortly to be the star of his own television series from BBC America, returns to comics in The Salmon of Doubt, brought to you by executive producers of the show Arvind Ethan David and Max Landis.

Plagued by nightmares about a childhood he never had, Dirk returns to Cambridge University to seek the advice of his former tutor, the time-traveling Professor Reg Chronotis. There he discovers that a holistic detective can have more than one past, and his adventures have only just begun… Featuring favorite characters from the original books as well as the cast from the TV series, including Elijah Wood.

STEPHEN: I can’t believe you don’t already have this on your pull list. This is the comic adaptation of Douglas Adams unfinished 3rd Dirk Gently book. How could you not want to grab this story by Arvind Ethan David?

helsing-vs-frankenstein-3GRIMM FAIRY TALES HELSING VS FRANKENSTEIN #3 (of 5)
    Writer: Patrick Shand
    Artist: Leonardo Colapietro
    Publisher: Zenescope Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99 USD
SOLICITATION: An unstoppable monster has been released, and Liesel Van Helsing is tasked with stopping it. However, a cunning adversary has been pulling strings from the distance, preventing Helsing from saving the day. Can Helsing do what must be done to save lives, or will she crumble when faces with the consequences of her own failure?

ETIENNE: Say what you will, but Zenescope puts out some of the most consistently stunning looking books on the market at the moment. Ok, I acknowledge they are all in the same genre and all revolve around pneumatic women doing cartwheel kicks in stilettos, but really is that always a bad thing? While on the one hand I like the gritty look of 2000AD or the extreme visuals of a Marco Rudy, sometimes I just like looking at something pretty.

    infamous-iron-man-1INFAMOUS IRON MAN #1
    Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
    Artist: Alex Maleev
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: There is a new Iron Man in town and his name is VICTOR VON DOOM. The greatest villain of the Marvel Universe will try something new. Where Tony Stark failed, Doom will succeed. What is Doom’s Master Plan?

ROB: I’m a sucker for the redemption arc, and Doom is just the person to drag me into it. Besides, Doom as Iron Man strikes me as rather entertaining.

    lady-death-extinction-express-1LADY DEATH EXTINCTION EXPRESS #1
    Writer: Brian Pulido
    Artist: Dheeraj Verma
    Publisher: Coffin Comics
    Cover Price: $7.99 USD
SOLICITATION: In Extinction Express, the Hellbourne Elders dispatch Atrocitas, an insane angel/demon hybrid assassin to destroy Lady Death for once and for all. But their epic confrontation proves tragic for a beloved character and sets in motion events that will change Lady Death’s undead life forever! Is this the road to extinction? Featuring the diabolical return of Hellwitch and the first appearance of CHAOTICA, a major new character in the Lady Death Universe.

ETIENNE: I have Major Spoilers to blame for my love of Lady Death. About 5 years ago the guys did a podcast on comics that appealed to a ‘certain type of man’ and I decided that I needed to pick up her comics. While I was initially drawn in by the voluptuous visuals, the deep and truly disturbing back story kept me interested. Now with the character back in its original creator’s hands, I hope that one day they will produce some more comics to rival the quality of CHAOS during the mid 90’s.

    star-trek-boldly-go-1STAR TREK BOLDLY GO #1
    Writer: Mark Johnson
    Artist: Tony Shasteen
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99 USD
SOLICITATION: STAR TREK’s 50th Anniversary Celebration continues with this all-new series following the adventures of Captain Kirk and the iconic crew! New worlds, New species, New ships, And a new danger unlike anything the Federation has encountered before! Boldly go into a new era of STAR TREK! Following the events of Star Trek Beyond!

ETIENNE: I am one of these fans of Star Trek who is really not that discerning. I don’t care if the reboot series is or is not the ‘real’ universe, if my little brain can manage to keep all the separate continuities in the Star Wars expanded universe together, it can certainly manage 2 continuities in Star Trek. I just like new stuff, and this looks new and exciting, so bring it on.

WAYNE: Star Trek boldly continues forward in this new comics series! I’ll be there, going where this Trek-fan has not gone before!

    weirddet5coverWEIRD DETECTIVE #5 of 5
    Writer: Fred Van Lente
    Artist: Guiu Vilanova
    Publisher: Dark Horse Comics

Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITITATION: Det. Sebastian Greene is determined to rescue his partner, Sana, even if it exposes his true demonic nature, but his only clue is the monster killing people all over New York. Can he find Sana, take down the killer, and protect himself from the powerful alien forces corrupting the NYPD?

STEPHEN: Where else can you find Cthulhu mythos and hard boiled detective comics smashed together? It’s been a great ride so far, and this is definitely the big bang to bring the mini-series to a close.

WAYNE: This has been a fascinating series! Can’t wait to see how it concludes! Highly recommended!
