My daughter is 12 years old, and self-identifies as a hipster.  I have learned to accept this, mostly because being a hipster child in 2016 means enjoying all the stuff Dad loves as a child in 1984.  Thus, we have shared pop-culture context.  Of course, that doesn’t mean that we always agree about that context, as she keeps trying to tell me that Ferris Bueller is a cheesy movie and she refuses to watch ‘The Blues Brothers’ with me.  This morning, we were discussing the upcoming Power Rangers movie, during which discussion she informed me that she didn’t want to disappoint me, but her favorite colorful Ranger show is not the original.  Her fave-rave is ‘Power Rangers: RPM’, which leads us to today’s not-as-hipster-as-she-thought query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) will still stand with my MSP sister Ashley and say Deep Space Nine, the greatest of the Star Trek series, bar none, asking: What’s your favorite iteration of a pop-culture property that’s NOT the original?

About Author

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

  1. I think most of my favorite Tokusatsu heroes fall under that category. A good example would be Gokaiger being my favorite Super Sentai series, though a big part of that is due to the acknowledgement to and involvement of past heroes, as well as the team’s ability to utilize past costumes, powers and themed power-ups to their mecha. I’m also a big fan of Kamen Rider Kiva and Ultraman X, both of which are far from the first in their series.

And while I have been a fan of Transformers since Gen 1, my favorite Transformers TV series quickly became “Transformers: Prime”.

I could list many. My favorite Star Trek series is DS9, my favorite entry in the Star Wars franchise was the “Clone Wars” animated series (though now that Thrawn is part of “Rebels”, that might change), my favorite Green Lantern character is Kilowog, my favorite Doctor is the Third Doctor, etc.

  2. While it has it’s flaws the rebooted Battlestar Galatica is in every way a better show than its original and damn fine tv in its own right
