IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

    aqm-cv7-dsAQUAMAN #7
    Writer: Dan Abnett
    Artist: Scot Eaton, Wayne Faucher
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “Who framed Aquaman?” The investigation into the Atlantean attack on American forces kicks off a mystery as the criminal collective N.E.M.O. unleashes a new and terrible weapon that threatens the existence of Atlantis itself.

JON: The one title I never thought I’d enjoy has me completely hooked. Dan Abnett has done the unthinkable by making Aquaman and can’t miss title with deep social/political undertones and excellent storytelling. I wish the art was more consistent but in any case, I highly recommend getting your fins on Aquaman.

    batman71BATMAN #7
    Writer: Tom King, Steve Orlando
    Artist: Riley Rossmo
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “NIGHT OF THE MONSTER MEN” part 1! The first crossover of the “Rebirth” era is here! As a huge storm approaches, Batman, Batwoman, and Nightwing try and prepare Gotham City for the worst, but nothing can prepare them for enormous tall monsters rampaging through the streets! Batman will need all of his allies to unite in order to stop these mad science monsters from tearing their city apart!

JON: Since the launch of Rebirth, DC has done so much right. Now, with the first crossover event beginning, I’m eager to see if the trend continues. I have a lot of faith in Tom King and Steve Orlando as writers. Plus, based on the solicitation, it sounds like Riley Rossmo’s art will pair perfectly with the story.

    chew_58-1CHEW #58
    Writer: John Layman
    Artist: Rob Guillory
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Three issues left. Goodbye, friends.

ROB: Been awhile since I’ve mentioned these, but it’s almost over and I really do not want to miss out on where this fantastic series ends up.

    hellboyandthebprd1954HELLBOY AND BPRD 1954 #1 (OF 2) BLACK SUN
    Writer: Mike Mignola, Chris Roberson
    Artist: Stephen Green
    Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
    SOLICITATION:
    He’s not just hunting yetis.

When an unknown creature attacks a research group on an Arctic expedition, Hellboy and the BPRD are sent to investigate. No longer the newbie, Hellboy thinks he can solve the mystery immediately, but what they find in the snow reveals something much bigger behind the beast.

ROB: It’s been awhile since I’ve picked up a Hellboy story. Two parter seems like a good way to go. Not that I’ve ever been disappointed in anything Mignola.

    the-mighty-thor-11THE MIGHTY THOR #11
    Writer: Jason Aaron
    Artist: Russell Dauterman
    Publisher: Marvel
    Cover Price: $3.99 USD
SOLICITATION: Prepare for the Team up you never expected! Thor’s crusade against the corporate overlords of Midgard reaches its climax–and the lives of all New Yorkers hang in the balance. The Goddess of Thunder and S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Roz Solomon make their final stand against the Exterminatrix and the Silver Samurai and they get help from the most unexpected source.

ETIENNE: Honestly, I would read anything that Aaron wrote, but when you couple that with either Dauterman or the previous resident artist on this book, Ribic, you end up with an utterly captivating story wrapped up in stunning visuals. It is hard to find any flaws with this series.

    ravenRAVEN #1
    Writer: Marv Wolfman
    Artist: Alisson Borges
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “The White Carnival” part 1! In a tale set between TEEN TITANS #24 and TEEN TITANS: REBIRTH #1, Raven takes a break from the team and moves to San Francisco to stay with her estranged aunt and face her most perilous challenge yet: high school! As Raven discovers more about her human side, one of her classmates goes missing under mysterious circumstances, and she must face an evil like none she’s known before!

MATTHEW: Half the reason this is here is because they’ve ditched the utterly ridiculous “feather-face” hood Raven was sporting a few months ago…

    revolution-1REVOLUTION #1
    Writer: Cullen Bunn
    Artist: Fico Ossio
    Publisher: IDW
    Cover Price: $3.99 USD
SOLICITATION: The Revolution Begins! Explosions rip across the Earth-and all signs of blame point to Optimus Prime and the Transformers! G.I. JOE refuses to go quietly-and they assemble heroes big enough to stop the invaders! Action Man and M.A.S.K. fight for humanity-but where do ROM and the Micronauts stand? Celebrating more than a decade of stories by IDW and Hasbro, this unprecedented bi-weekly event draws everything together-and leaves nothing standing.

ETIENNE: This is basically my childhood in a comic, all wrapped up and ready to explode. I will be honest the GI Joe / Transformer team ups were my least favourite during the 80’s, but time has moved on and these massive group comics can either be spectacular successes, or complete failures. However I have faith this will be fantastic because Cullen Bunn very rarely lets me down.

MATTHEW: All my childhood toys together in one comic! I’m hoping that the execution is up to the task of making this shared universe tick, narratively. Worst case scenario, it’s got Optimus Prime and ROM in it…

    seven-to-eternity-1SEVEN TO ETERNITY #1
    Writer: Rick Remender
    Artist: Jerome Opena
    Publisher: Image comics
    Cover Price: $3.99 USD
SOLICITATION: The God of Whispers has spread an omnipresent paranoia to every corner of the kingdom of Zhal; his spies hide in every hall spreading mistrust and fear. Adam Osidis, a dying knight from a disgraced house, must choose between joining a hopeless band of magic users in their desperate bid to free their world of the evil God, or accepting his promise to give Adam everything his heart desires.

ETIENNE: I have a rule; never buy a book written by Remender if he is only ‘borrowing’ the characters. He has a tendency not to play well with others and often breaks half the ‘toys’ before he puts them back in the box for other writers to carry on with. However left to his own devices with a world he can destroy and characters he can torment, his books can be a work of genius.

    tmnto62TMNT ONGOING #62
    Writer: Tom Waltz, Kevin Eastman
    Artist: Dave Wachter
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “Chasing Phantoms,” Part 2! One ally close to the Turtles faces grave danger while another makes a choice that will alter his life forever. Meanwhile the Turtles wonder if their path truly lies with the Foot Clan…

ROB: Ah, more TMNT goodness. Still my favorite ongoing series, and I’m still going to recommend it every time it comes up. This series is fantastic.

    trinity_cv1_575ef71bcb5080-37357142TRINITY #1
    Writer: Francis Manapul
    Artist: Francis Manapul
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “BETTER TOGETHER” part 1! Together again for the first time! Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. The core of the World’s Greatest Heroes…but with a new Man of Steel, the bonds these three share will be tested and redefined by super-star writer/artist Francis Manapul. In this premiere issue, see the trio travel from Metropolis to Gotham City and beyond to learn what forces launched their heroic careers. But how will this journey of discovery lead them to a new threat?

JON: I’m very interested in seeing how the dynamic of DC’s big three is explored in this new title from Francis Manapul. With the pre-Flashpoint Superman in the mix, I expect this series to help re-establish the quintessential bond readers expect from the three heroes.

    wickedanddivine1831THE WICKED + THE DIVINE 1831 ONE-SHOT
    Writer: Kieron Gillen
    Artist: Stephanie Hans
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “MODERN ROMANCE” – Critically-acclaimed THE WICKED + THE DIVINE goes back to the nineteenth century, to see what became of the Romantic poets one infamous night on Lake Geneva…

MATTHEW: We’ve heard tell of previous iterations of the titular WicDiv gawds, now we get to see it first-hand. I’m still of the opinion that we should all be reading this book, and here’s a perfect “jumping on point!”

    wonderland-51-finaleWONDERLAND #51 (Finale)
    Writer: Patrick Shand
    Artist: Francesca Follini
    Publisher: Zenescope
    Cover Price: $5.99 USD
SOLICITATION: After years of struggle and torment Calie Liddle has finally realized she cannot save Wonderland from the madness that infests it. All she wants to do is go home and try to live a normal life with her daughter Violet, and try to put the memories of Wonderland behind her. But escaping madness is never that easy and Wonderland has no intention of letting her go.

ETIENNE: I already got to read this for an advanced review last week, and although it wasn’t the best this series has ever put out, it is certainly worth picking up to find out just how they close this series out.

If Revolution #1 is horrible it will completely devastate me. It’s the comic that every kid of the 80’s would want and how they played with their toys. Can’t wait.
