    Question Of The Day

Major Spoilers Question of the Day: Mashup Edition

    Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonSeptember 21, 2016Updated:September 21, 20163 Comments1 Min Read

It’s common knowledge that if you mashup two things (Winnie The Pooh + Doctor Who!), you can make a killer t-shirt idea out of it.  (Serenity + Death Note!)  It makes for interesting story ideas (Deadpool + Romero’s Zombie Universe) and even potential character interactions no one could ever have seen coming (Steven Universe + that one episode of ‘Star Trek’ with the Horta!)  Best of all, you can create something entire new, like Saga (Star Wars + Little Miss Sunshine!) or The Blacklist (Doctor Doom + Stef from ‘Pretty In Pink’), leading to a whole new concept and today’s amalgamated query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) still thinks that Doctor Who and Star Trek need to have an official, on-screen crossover, if only for the Cyber-Borg interaction, asking: What two pop culture items do you think would make the best mashup story concept?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

Wow, this is a tough one. I’ll go with super heroes and pro wrestling. Well, 80’s WWE already was pretty close but I mean really out there, like Superman vs Muhammad Ali level stuff. I have hopes of upcoming Tiger Mask animation to fill this void, it starts October 1st in Japan and includes actual New Japan Pro Wrestling guys as themselves. (hint Matthew)

I’d like to see a mash-up of a cartoon geared toward boys and a cartoon geared toward girls: Transformers meets My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I have no idea what the plot would be but both groups would be just baffled by each other’s existence.

      Marvel + Star Wars.

Before anyone complains, it shouldn’t be a traditional crossover, but instead be a “What if?” type story with the characters and concepts of the Marvel Universe reinvented to exist in the Star Wars universe (in a similar vein to Phineas and Ferb Star Wars). Some ideas and characters might be familiar, where others might be completely unrecognizable.
