[Solicitations] DC Comics Covergirls looks at female characters’ evolution

Press ReleaseBy Press ReleaseAugust 12, 20162 Mins Read

    PRESS RELEASE:

From the trailblazing Wonder Woman of the 1940’s to the edgy power-driven comics series like Birds of Prey, DC COMICS COVERGIRLS takes a look at the female characters of DC Comics throughout the company’s history, and features many of DC’s iconic covers.

This beautiful, 209-page hardcover book comprehensively explores and examines the evolution of the women of DC Comics. Starting with the 1942 introduction of DC Comics’ most famous heroine, Wonder Woman, the book traces her various incarnations up to the present day all-female super hero team, Birds of Prey as well as the likes of Lois Lane, Supergirl, Promethea, Catwoman, Batgirl, other heroines and of course, villains.

The history and of the comic book covergirl is covered in-depth, starting with its earliest Detective Comics beginnings, evolving out of the pulp/dime store adventure novels and magazines. The classic comic covergirl must entice the reader, of course, but it must also hint at her character and the story within. They were, and are, more than enticing visual symbols, they are also mythic characters – icons of good and evil, historically reflecting the social awareness and ethical dilemmas of their age. DC Comics Covergirls traces how it all evolved, how the these images helped present complex and powerful female characters and their stories, as well as selling millions of copies.

There’s 250 full-color images, with dozens of classic comic covers presented on full pages. In addition, renown comic illustrator Adam Hughes penned the foreword.
