Major Spoilers Question of the Day: Hanna-Barbera Action Heroes Edition

Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonMay 18, 20166 Comments1 Min Read

Future Quest arrives in stories today, reviving the Hanna- Barbera Action Heroes for a new age, and I hope I’m not spoiling anything be telling you I liked it.  (Check the review for the full details!)  When I was younger, I was exposed to many of these characters both first-run and in syndication, and I still have a great fondness for all of ’em.  (Even ‘Devlin.’)  The Impossibles managed to be almost The Monkees while combating evil in all its forms; Jonny Quest and Hadji were always good for a half-hour of fun; and the majestic tones of Space Ghost still give me goosebumps decades later.  Of course, I sometimes feel like the only one with a soft spot for Biiiiiiirrrrrdmaaaan that predates his run as a lawyer and I expect that even Future Quest won’t bring back Won-Won-Wonder Wheels, leading to today’s retro-active query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) won’t ask best, because honestly, they’re all pretty great in their own way, asking: Who is your favorite of the Hanna-Barbera Action Heroes?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

I’m a fan of Harvey Birdman, attorney in law. I can still remember quite a few of his cases after many years, Apache Chiefs coffee accident as the most, should I say, vibrant memory.

I love them all, but my absolute favorite is Gravity Girl from the Galaxy Trio. I love her concept and in my books she’s one of the most powerful super heroes out there. I’m pretty sure she’d be a formidable opponent for the likes of Superman and the Hulk. Coming in second and third place respectively are Birdman and Multi-Man from The Impossibles :)

By the way, matthew, did you catch the episode of Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc., where Scooby teamed up with Speed Buggy, Jabberjaw, Captain Caveman and the Funky Phantom to rescue their respective teammates?

I did… I kinda loved it. It’s actually the only one I have seen all the way through.

I’m going to add another vote to Space Ghost. Great design, cool looking villains, and a pet monkey.
