Major Spoilers Poll of the Week: Ringing in your ears edition

Robot OverlordBy Robot OverlordMay 3, 201614 Comments1 Min Read

This week, Major Spoilerite Silvergray asks the all important question, “Who wins in a screaming match?”

    tothewiki

    BLACK CANARY

One of DC’s earliest super-heroines, Black Canary has appeared in many of the company’s flagship team-up titles including Justice Society of America and Justice League of America. Since the late 1960s, the character has frequently been paired with archer superhero Green Arrow professionally and romantically.

Initially, the character was a hand-to-hand fighter without superpowers who often posed as a criminal to infiltrate criminal gangs. Later stories depicted her as a world-class martial artist with a superpower: the “Canary Cry”, a high-powered sonic scream which could shatter objects and incapacitate enemies.

    BANSHEE

Banshee (Sean Cassidy) is a fictional superhero appearing Marvel Comics, commonly in association with the X-Men. Created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Werner Roth, the character first appeared in X-Men #28 (January 1967).

An Irish mutant, Banshee possesses a “sonic scream”, capable of harming enemies’ auditory systems and causing physical vibrations. He is named after the banshee, a legendary ghost from Irish mythology, said to possess a powerful cry.

As always, it depends on which version you are comparing. And when, for the sake of the poll it says screams, so, saying that Black Canary could kick his ass in a fight is irrelevant. I assume they are each at their best, facing each other, without the ability to interact beyond screaming at each other.

      Black Canary:

      * Smallville: she put Clark on his knees and made his ears bleed
      * Arrow: it’s tech, that sounds like a shopping center sensor beeping about tagged merchandise – reasonably powerful, but not a physical power
      * comics: various effects, Injustice: makes craphead Superman slow down & put his hand over her mouth, has in the past the ability to break things, knock out, disorient, and at some of the higher levels flight and the ability to Kill.

      Banshee:

      * X-Men movies: flight, knock out, disorient
      * comics: various effects, all of Canary’s at her highest power, and beyond that he has shown the ability to completely disintegrate his targets

Additionally, he possesses a psionic field that protects him against some, but not all sonic attacks, most importantly he possesses “selective hearing” and can actually tune out anything he does not want to hear.

Completely disintegrating your target, psionic protection, and the ability to not hear your shrieky opponent, Banshee FTW

If we compare their strongest versions, I think Banshee would probably win.

    3. Jeffrey Corbello on May 3, 2016 1:44 pm

      I just don’t like Banshee’s costumes.

    4. b003 on May 3, 2016 2:09 pm

Fishnets FTW! Why I also pick Zatanna over Dr Strange.

      • Ray on May 3, 2016 7:52 pm

so what if we dress Banshee in Fishnets?

        • b003 on May 5, 2016 7:32 pm

          That’s just so wrong.

Provided that he is not passed out drunk, I will give it to Banshee. With his ability to fly around even though he is screaming like a jackass that will give him an edge.
I would like to caution you though that you should probably wear your Tweaked Audio headphones that assist in cancelling some of the sound when you are banging Black Canary because she is a screamer.

    6. Mark D Harris on May 3, 2016 2:41 pm

Most of what I know about either of them comes from their movie and TV appearances. I saw Banshee fly in an X-Men movie by screaming at the water. I’ve never seen Black Canary to anything like that, so I’ll vote for Banshee.

    7. Sam on May 3, 2016 3:09 pm

Black Bolt, hands down, no contest.

    8. Daniel Langsdale on May 3, 2016 3:31 pm

When it comes to screaming, it’s not even close. Banshee all the way.

    9. Ray on May 3, 2016 7:53 pm

I recall the Black Canary being loud enough to stagger Superman, and we all know how overpowered he is… I would go Canary over Banshee

    10. Lt Flowbee on May 3, 2016 8:44 pm

Banshee wins hands down. Have you ever heard someone “He was screaming like a canary?”

    11. alloytoo on May 3, 2016 8:44 pm

      Tyroc, Who else.

    12. Rafael Muñoz on May 8, 2016 8:27 pm

Banshee can use his scream to level a mountain, put people to slpeep, use it as sonar, and, of course, fly, between other things. So, my vote goes to him.
