IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

    allnewxmen6ALL NEW X-MEN #6
    Writer: Dennis Hopeless
    Artist: Mark Bagley
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: In the wake of terrible acts committed by the adult Cyclops, mutantkind is hated and feared more than ever. And try as he might to divorce himself from his predecessor’s legacy, some believe that the young Scott Summers is destined to grow up and commit those sins. Now, there’s one mutant who believes that he can spare mutantkind if he prevents Scott from becoming that man. Will the young Cyclops’ story end here?

ROB: The past X-Men have been globe-hopping and trying to show the world what mutants are made of. The story has been interesting, the group is fun, and getting to see how the world is working in the current Marvel is worth every page.

    BRE24coverBATMAN AND ROBIN ETERNAL #24

Writers: Scott Snyder & Various

Artist: Carlo Pagulayan, Jason Paz
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: It’s the catastrophic conclusion of the acclaimed weekly series that brings together all of Batman’s one-time partners! Mother’s trap has been sprung, and the whole world is feeling her wrath! Can Dick Grayson pull together his allies to fight an entire army of foes? Is one among them still under Mother’s control? And what will become of Cassandra Cain? You won’t believe how huge this battle can become!

WAYNE: Man, do I love these weekly Batman titles! This concludes this one, but hoping there’s more in our future! Highly recommended!

    CC7coverCAPTAIN CANUCK #7

Writer: Kalman Andrasofszky

Artist: Leonard KIrk
    Publisher: Chapterhouse Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Site ALEPH is secured. Captain Canuck and his brother Michael finally have a working pact. Equilibrium is ready to explode onto the world stage and do good on a global scale. So everything’s great, right? Wrong. Captain Canuck’s second dynamic arc “The Gauntlet” starts here!

WAYNE: I love heroes from other countries, so I truly enjoy this title! Great plotting and great art, too! Don’t miss it!

    GhostBusters_Deviations-1GHOSTBUSTERS: DEVIATIONS ONE-SHOT
    Writer: Kelly Thompson
    Artist: Nelson Daniel
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: In a world, where on that fateful day in New York, the Ghostbusters did NOT cross streams, and were thus unable to destroy Gozer or close his portal. Now, 31 days later, NYC has descended into chaos and ruin, ruled with the deliciously soft fist of… THE STAY-PUFT MARSHMALLOWMAN!

THOMAS: IDW’s treatment of its licensed properties has always been great. This “What If?” tale of a New York City conquered by Gozer is going to the top of my read pile.

    Huck05_CvrHUCK #5
    Writer: Mark Millar
    Artist: Rafael Albequerque
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.50
SOLICITATION: An old grudge leads to deadly threats against Huck and those he holds dear.

DAVID: It makes me feel weird to be so excited about a Mark Millar book, but I am all in on Huck. Last issue was great, and let’s hope they keep it up.

    internationalironman1INTERNATIONAL IRON MAN #1
    Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
    Artist: Alex Maleev
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Who is Tony Stark, really? Since learning that he was adopted as a baby, this question has cast a shadow over Stark’s life. Now, it is time to uncover what his legacy truly is, a journey that will carry Tony into new directions as a man and as a super hero. Alongside his strange new quasi-ally Doctor Doom, Iron Man will discover new things about the Marvel Universe he didn’t know existed before! A character deconstruction from Bendis and Maleev along the lines of their award-winning DAREDEVIL run!

ROB: Tony Stark, Super Spy? Not entirely certain how this is going to work, but I’m looking forward to seeing how this book plays out. And with Bendis as the writer, this should get rather interesting.

Legacy of strode_5_coverLEGACY OF LUTHER STRODE #5
    Writer: Justin Jordan
    Artist: Tradd Moore
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.50
    SOLICITATION: Luther versus The Bound.

CHRIS: The final chapter in Justin Jordan and Tradd Moore’s uber violent Luther Strode trilogy has been fantastic and actually somewhat of a departure from the previous two. While the fighting has been present, I feel the story is stronger in Legacy. This issue it looks like it’s really gonna hit the fan though! And I’m not saying Tradd Moore sets out to draw a subliminal vagina in every issue, but he’s totally drawing a subliminal vagina in every issue.

Legends of tomorrow_1_coverpickoftheweekLEGENDS OF TOMORROW #1
    Writer: Gerry Conway & Various
    Artist: Eduardo Pansica & Various
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $7.99
SOLICITATION: It’s four powerhouse tales in one colossal comic, as some of comics’ most legendary talents launch new tales of Firestorm, Metamorpho, Metal Men and Sugar and Spike-that’s right, Sugar and Spike!
    FIRESTORM
    Written by GERRY CONWAY
Art by EDUARDO PANSICA and ROB HUNTER
Firestorm is back! To save Jason Rausch, Firestorm will need to retrieve Danton Black’s stolen research from Professor Stein’s lab. But if Jason can’t fuse with Ronnie by the Firestorm Protocol…who can?
    METAL MEN
    Written by LEN WEIN
Art by YILDIRAY CINAR and TREVOR SCOTT
Doctor Will Magnus’ Metal Men may be the next step in robotics technology, but when the mysterious cyber-terrorist known only as Nameless comes after them, they may have met their match!
    METAMORPHO
    Written by AARON LOPRESTI
Art by AARON LOPRESTI with MATT BANNING
Metamorpho-a prisoner of millionaire industrialist Simon Stagg! Now, the only person who can save him is Stagg’s beautiful daughter, Sapphire!? But can they defeat Stagg’s prehistoric bodyguard, Java?
    SUGAR & SPIKE
    Written by KEITH GIFFEN
    Art by BILQUIS EVELY
The last time we saw Sugar and Spike, they were still in diapers! Now, they’re grown up, and they’ve become private investigators who specialize in cleaning up embarrassing problems for the DCU’s greatest heroes. Sugar & Spike’s first assignment: retrieve a cache of Batman’s retired costumes that have been stolen by Killer Moth!

CHRIS: Yeah it’s an anthology and they’re not known for lasting but it has obscure characters and some good writers so I’m in for the first issue at least. Plus, Sugar & Spike! C’mon! Matthew and I can’t be the only ones excited for them can we? But that $7.99 cover price…Yeesh!

WAYNE: DC rules TV like Marvel owns the movies! I love the CW show this is based on, so can’t wait to read it!

Poweman Iron Fist_2_coverPOWER MAN AND IRON FIST #2
    Writer: David Walker
    Artist: Sanford Greene
    Publisher: Marvel
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: JENNIE AND THE FAMILY SUPERSOUL STONE
    • A villain now has her hands on a mystically powerful stone, and it’s all Luke and Danny’s fault!
    • Well, maybe it’s not ALL their fault. They were tricked by an old friend, but that’s little comfort to our two heroes, much less the gangster from whom they took the stone.
    • Someone phone Jessica Jones and let her know Luke’s going to be late. Maybe she could binge-watch an awesome streaming super hero show?

CHRIS: Man issue one was so good, it was an instant add to my pull list. Everything from the tone to the unique artwork made this book standout and it’s just another example of Marvel doing something right with characters that aren’t Iron Man, Spider-Man or Wolverine. With their Netflix shows coming soon, these two are gonna blow up big!

STEPHEN: I really got a kick out of the first issue, and the hook was strong enough for me to see this series through the first arc, so I’m down for Power Man and Iron Fist #2 this week.

    RBSOBM_Cv10ROBIN: SON OF BATMAN #10
    Writer: Patrick Gleason
Artist: Patrick Gleason and Mick Gray
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Son of Batman faces the Son of Lu’un Darga! Damian, Maya, Goliath and their new friends seek out Talia al Ghul in order to fight back against the rising threat of the Lu’un Darga family, only to come face to face with the rival clan’s champion, young Den Darga! Has Damian finally met his match?

DAVID: Patrick Gleason has had quite the run with this book, and the story he started isn’t quite over yet. Damien has matured quite a bit, but is he ready to go to war?

    spiderwoman5SPIDER-WOMAN #5
    Writer: Dennis Hopeless
    Artist: Javier Rodriguez
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Now that’s she’s back on Earth, Jess learns that she’s still got a lot of work to do when it comes to being a full-time super hero AND a full-time mom! Get your first real glimpse at Jess’ new life and all the people in it right here! THE NEXT CHAPTER OF JESSICA DREW’S STORY BEGINS WITH THIS CAN’T-MISS ISSUE!

ROB: Jessica Drew is a mom! Not a lot of superheroes get to be mothers, and I’m looking forward to seeing how this one plays out.
