Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment have announced actress Connie Nielsen will play Hippolyta in the upcoming Wonder Woman movie.
Hippolyta, the queen of the Amazons, and mother to Wonder Woman and Donna Tory, first appeared in All-Star Comics #8 in December 1941. The character was created by William Moulton Marston and Harry G. Peter. As has been previously announced, the movie will take place during World War I, and it will be interesting to see how Connie Nielsen’s character will be used in the movie. Will get the entire backstory of the Amazons, including Hippolyta’s desire to have a child?
Gal Gadot will appear as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that arrives on March 25th, which means the Wonder Woman movie could have a huge dump of information on her backstory for those who don’t know her backstory. But is the backstory necessary? Wouldn’t it be better to just have Hippolyta appear as needed to send her daughter off to the world of man?
Patty Jenkins is directing Wonder Woman, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 23, 2017.
