IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

    astrocity30ASTRO CITY #30
    Writer: Kurt Busiek
    Artist: Brent Eric Anderson
    Publisher: Vertigo
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “The Menace from Earth” part 2. Trapped behind enemy lines on an alien planet, young Karl Furst has only one chance-an alien child who has been raised all his life to hate the First Family and anyone connected with them. Plus: All-out battle against the Unisaur, Zirros’s mightiest weapon.

MATTHEW: The first half of this arc was really intriguing, giving us an in-depth look at life on an alien world. I’m looking forward to seeing how it plays out (and also talking with writer Kurt Busiek about it in the new ‘Inside Astro City!’)

DKIII#2DARK KNIGHT III: MASTER RACE #2 of 8
    Writers: Frank Miller, Brian Azzarello
    Artists: Andy Kubert, Klaus Janson

Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $5.99

SOLICITATION: The unexpected finale to the Dark Knight saga continues as Carrie Kelly gets caught…that is, she finds herself…she gets into – well, you’re just going to have to read it yourself.

STEPHEN: The first issue really surprised me. It’s not as great as The Dark Knight Returns, but it is a solid Batman story without the Batman you think you knew you wanted.

WAYNE: Glad this is coming out on a holiday week! This will be an early Christmas present for me! I enjoyed the first issue, anxious to see where we’ll go this time!

    King3coverKING #3
    Writer: Joshua Hale Fialkov

Artist: Bernard Chang
    Publisher: Jet City Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: King risks everything-even his crappy job-to protect Roze, a mysterious woman with regenerative abilities. King suspects that Roze just might be capable of giving Earth a new lease on life. While King and Roze flee through Laurel Canyon, he desperately tries to remember something-anything-from his boss’s “lifeseed” orientation class.

WAYNE: Mr. Fialkov always writes a good read, and I’ve enjoyed the previous issues! Very diverse, very engaging with great scripting and art! Don’t miss it!

    lastgangintownLAST GANG IN TOWN #1
    Writer: Simon Oliver
    Artist: Rufus Dayglo
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Forget what you know of England, of the “Land of Hope and Glory.” Instead, try damp and depressing, and embrace this miserable island for what it is. Our story kicks off in 1976: the country coming apart at its flared corduroy seams, a decade after the Great Train Robbery, when British crime has gone decidedly soft in the middle.
Time for a new generation of criminals to rise: a band of snotty-nosed heroes driven by destiny and cheap cider, who will strike fear back into the establishment, put art back into crime and crime back into art, and pull off what will become known as the heist of the century.
This new series from Simon Oliver (FBP: FEDERAL BUREAU OF PHYSICS) and Rufus Dayglo (Tank Girl), spans three decades, from the punk rock ’70s to the decadent ’80s and beyond, charting the rise, fall and redemption of a group of bandits that changed the face of the criminal underworld and closed the door on a legacy.

GEORGE: I like Simon Oliver and I love stories about decaying, 1970s England. Don’t know why, I just do. And I gotta know the story of the paunchy guy in the back with the nailbat.

    namelessNAMELESS #6
    Writer: Grant Morrison
    Artist: Chris Burnham
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: The end has come for Nameless and the crew of the White Valiant. Imprisoned within the labyrinthine mind of a monstrous alien lifeform, there can be no escape, no exit, no hope.

But who is the Veiled Lady and what part will she play in Earth’s salvation-or its damnation?

GEORGE: Vintage Morrisonian weirdness and it’s still so good.

Patsy WalkerPATSY WALKER AKA HELLCAT #1
    Writer: Kate Leth
    Artist: Britney Williams
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: PATSY WALKER has managed to escape her past, her enemies and Hell itself (literally), but nothing compares to job hunting in New York City! Between trying to make rent and dodging (literal) bullets, Patsy barely has time to deal with her mother’s exploitative romance comics about her childhood resurfacing, much less how they start to interfere with her work and dating life. As she goes from living a double life to a triple, what the Hell is Patsy Walker supposed to do? Raise your (literal) claws for PATSY WALKER, AKA HELLCAT!

MATTHEW: Patsy Walker is a very under-served 70s Marvel hero, but one who could use another shot at the big time. Is she the next Star-Lord? Dunno, but this looks fun!

    Rocketeer1coverROCKETEER AT WAR #1 of 4
    Writer: Marc Guggenheim

Artist: Dave Bullock
    Publisher: IDW Publishing

Cover Price: $4.99

SOLICITATION: Europe, 1942-the world is at war! As the Allies battle against the Axis, able bodied men everywhere enlist in the war effort, including Cliff Secord. Secord, also known as The Rocketeer, has been thrust full throttle into the heat of battle, and-with or without his jet pack-he will depend on his wits and daring if he is to survive!

WAYNE: The Rocketeer is one of those classic comics characters who deserves to go on with new stories! Mr. Guggenheim is an accomplished comics creator helping making The CW’s Arrow a terrific show! Put them together, and I can’t wait to see the results! A must read!

    pickoftheweeksagaSAGA #32
    Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
    Artist: Fiona Staples
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Marko and Alana learn something.

MATTHEW: Seems like forever since we got a new issue of ‘Saga.’ Good time to for a reread and catch-up!

ROB: Saga is still one of the more interesting reads coming out lately. And seeing this family get back together is going to huge.

    spider-womanSPIDER-WOMAN #2
    Writer: Dennis Hopeless
    Artist: Javier Rodriguez
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: TRAPPED in an alien hospital with a bunch of other moms-to-be, Jessica Drew has suddenly found herself in over her head! It’s anything but business as usual as Jess realizes she’s the only person who can save the day – but only if she can keep herself and her baby safe in the process!

ROB: Pregnant super heroes. I am enjoying this as a concept at this point and am excited to see how it’s handled going forth.

    tmnt53TMNT ONGOING #53
    Writer: Tom Waltz, Kevin Eastman
    Artist: Michael Dialynas
    Publisher: iDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Michelangelo is warmly welcomed when he visits the Mutanimals. But the hospitality may be cut short when he discovers what Hob’s new plan is…

ROB: Mikey and the Mutanimals sounds like fun to me. And maybe the new guys in town will crash the party forcing the crews back together.

    transfomrersgijoeTRANSFORMERS VS GI JOE #10
    Writer: John Barber, Tom Scioli
    Artist: Tom Scioli
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: REMEMBER US?! The most titanic tale of the twenty-first century takes an unexpected twist-BUT WHEN HAS TRANSFORMERS VS. G.I. JOE DONE ANY LESS?! Expect the unexpected-then throw your expectations out the window!

GEORGE: Any month where Transformers vs GI Joe comes out is better than any month in which it doesn’t. It’s a fact.

ROBOT OVERLORD: MEATBAG VOTING HAS ENDED! IT IS NOW TIME FOR YOU – THE SPOILERITES – TO SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE COMICS YOU ARE MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS WEEK. YOUR ROBOT OVERLORD COMMANDS YOU!
