IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

    hawkeye2ALL NEW HAWKEYE #2
    Writer: Jeff Lemire
    Artist: Ramon Perez
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Arrows over Bed-Stuy! Intrigue at the circus! The past and present merge as Hawkeyes Barton and Bishop race against time to save a group of innocent kids, with devastating powers.

ROB: Issue one was great, and the blending of the past and future story lines is looking to be interesting. Besides, this is the only place to find two Hawkeyes.

    Batman47coverBATMAN #47

Writer: Scott Snyder
    Artists: Greg Capullo, Danny Miki

Publisher: DC Comics

Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: While Jim Gordon is in the fight of his life against Mr. Bloom, Bruce Wayne discovers a shocking secret about his past that will change everything in Gotham City! This issue features open-to-order variant covers by Alex Ross that will be shipped in opaque polybags.

WAYNE: It’s always a GREAT comics week when a new issue of Batman comes out! As we head to #50, I can’t wait to see what the Bat-team has in store for us!

BMTMNT1coverBATMAN TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #1
    Writer: James T Tynion IV
    Artist: Freddie E Williams II
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: DC Comics and IDW team up for the crossover you never saw coming as two of the greatest entertainment icons meet for the first time! In Gotham City, a series of deadly raids leads Batman to believe he’s up against a group of highly trained ninjas known as the Foot Clan! Somehow, they’ve crossed over to another dimension and are determined to take advantage of the situation while looking to get back home. But they haven’t come alone: Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo are hot on their trail. Get ready for excitement as heroes and villains from both worlds clash and team up in an epic battle that threatens the very fabric of reality!

ROB: This is one of the few times you’re going to find me excited about a Batman title, but this half-shelled crossover is exactly the kind of thing that makes me love comics.

STEPHEN: There is nothing about this book I don’t want to see. I’m sold on the title alone.

WAYNE: I never thought I’d be looking forward to this crossover! However, with Mr. Tynion scripting and Mr. Williams providing art, I’m anxious for this to hit the stack of stuff!

    hercules2HERCULES #2
    Writer: Dan Abnett
    Artist: Luke Ross
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Creatures of ancient myth still linger in the world, but they are on the brink of extinction. The Modern Age has no place for them. But Hercules has moved with the times–only he can protect them against the crushing weight of the future. Except he is part of the old age too, born in ancient times before the risk of civilization, the world’s first super hero, a champion through the ages. If he fails in this struggle, he dies with them. Forever.

ROB: Hercules has been an interesting character the last few years, with a handful of titles, this one seems to be promising.

    monstress1MONSTRESS #2
    Writer: Marjorie M. Liu
    Artist: Sana Takeda
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Maika fights to cross the wall.

MATTHEW: This series had one of the best first issues in recent history (and Image has had some doozies of late.) Get in on the awesome before it’s too late…

    NEWROM_Cv1_ds_55f8b2ad433182.94143180NEW ROMANCER
    Writer: Peter Milligan
    Artist: Brett Parson
    Publisher: Vertigo
    Cover Price: 3.99
SOLICITATION: Fired from a cushy job in Silicon Valley, Lexy becomes a coder for New Romancer, an Internet-dating app that’s seen better days. To create fake profiles, she plunders characteristics from history’s most notorious lovers. Using little-known writings by Ada Lovelace, the world’s first computer programmer, Lexy pushes the boundaries of coding and accidentally unleashes history’s greatest lover: Lord Byron. Online dating meets courtly love in this paranormal rom-com by Vertigo veteran writer Peter Milligan and rising art-star Brett Parson (Tank Girl).

RODRIGO: Most interesting comic book premise this month… maybe this year.

    scarlet witch 1SCARLET WITCH #1
    Writer: James Robinson
    Artist: Vanesa Del Rey
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Witchcraft is broken – and the SCARLET WITCH is on a journey across the globe to fix it. From the back alleys of Manhattan, to the serene Greek Isles, to the bustling streets of Hong Kong, Wanda will have to face down her foes and find out who her true friends are. But as Wanda solves magical crimes and pieces witchcraft back together, the most important question remains: Who is the mastermind that broke it in the first place? Written by Eisner Award winner JAMES ROBINSON, with covers by Eisner Award winner DAVID AJA with the first issue drawn by fan-favorite VANESA DEL REY!

MATTHEW: The “magic is broken” premise sounds a bit familiar, but it’s at least interesting, and it’s about time Wanda got her own ongoing series without sibling or robit husband. The art looks strong, too…

    STGL6coverSTAR TREK/GREEN LANTERN #6 of 6
    Writer: Mike Johnson
    Artist: Angel Hernandez
    Cover Artist: Stephen Mooney
    Publisher: IDW Publishing/DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99

SOLICITATION: It’s the final chapter of the crossover event of 2015! The dead have risen. Heroes have fallen. The last survivors of Starfleet and the Lantern Corps join together to fight the greatest threat the galaxy has ever known. Who will be left standing? Don’t miss the shocking events that will change the future of both franchises forever!

WAYNE: What a great read this has been! I can’t wait to see how things resolve in this issue. I’m still hoping we’ll see another team-up of these wonderful sci-fi franchises! More, please!

    symmetry00SYMMETRY #1
    Story By: Matt Hawkins
    Art By: Raffaele Ienco
    Publisher: Image
    Cover Price: 3.99
SOLICITATION: Utopia is here. Hunger, sickness, work… all relics of a long forgotten past. For the greater good of the human species, all individuality, creativity, and negative emotions have been genetically bred out and medically suppressed. The population is limited to segregated areas where people lead long lives of leisure, games, and socializing. Only one man and one woman seem to notice, care, or think differently. Once they find each other, their relationship sparks a revolution… but will their love cause the salvation or destruction of mankind?

MATTHEW: This sounds uber-creepy, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it plays out. Join Stephen and me on this week’s Dueling Reviews to find out!

RODRIGO: I’m down for dystopian future fables. Art looks good too.

STEPHEN: There were two books I was really looking forward to this week. This is one of them. Dystopian future? Check. Crazy weird art? Check. No capes and tights? Check!

    witchbladeartcoverWITCHBLADE 20th ANNIVERSARY LITHO
    Artist: Michael Turner
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: 30.00

RODRIGO: Happy witchbladeversary! This is old school turner art, so it’s worth it just for that.
