It’s probably one of the most iconic frames of animation depicting love; Lady and the Tramp’s romantic dinner of spaghetti is hitting the auction block this weekend in Dallas, Texas.
“It’s simply the most iconic image from the entire movie and one of the most beloved of all Disney images,” said Jim Lentz, Director of Animation Art at Heritage Auctions, “in the scene where Tramp takes Lady on a romantic date in the alley behind Tony’s Ristorante for dinner. The spaghetti kiss is one of the sweetest scenes ever filmed in a cartoon.”
The cel is hand-painted, as cels during the time period would have been painted, and included the master pan background used in the scene.
Lady and the Tramp was released in 1955 through Disney’s Buena Vista Distribution. The 15th film in the Disney animation lineup tells the tale of a female Cocker Spaniel who falls in love with a mutt named Tramp. It’s a love story for the ages, ladies and gentlemen!
According to Heritage Auctions, the cel should bring in more than $35,000 this weekend (December 13-14).
Additional cels on the auction block included a black and white Mickey Mouse cel from Mickey’s man Friday, as well as a couch gag frame from the Simpson’s Rosebud episode, a cel from the very first Max Fleisher Superman cartoon, and Popeye and Whimpy from the origina Organ Grinders Swing.
