Major Spoilers Question Of The Day: Best Redesign Edition

Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonNovember 14, 20157 Comments1 Min Read

Recent projects have allowed me to really look at the various costumes of the last 75 years of comic heroes, and has led to the intriguing discovery that some of my favorite supers actually have more than one distinct look.  While the black Spider-Man suit was borne of a ratings stunt, but its design is bold and strong, while Colossal Boy’s transition from ‘1950s space cowboy’ to ‘red and blue gimp harness’ left him with two very different, very interested and very dated (for differing reasons) looks.  Perhaps the best redesign of all is Jamie McKelvie’s rework of Carol Danvers from her bathing suit and boots (which, it has to be said, I didn’t mind) to the more military look of her new costume, echoing Mar-Vell’s red-and-blue uniform.  Of course, that costume is itself a redesign, as his first spacesuit was green-and-white with a fin, leading us to today’s Make-It-Work query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) also has good things to say about certain New 52 revamps (like Adam Strange and the latest iteration of Cyborg, but definitely NOT Superman), asking: What is the best redesign (of costumes, sets, vehicles or what-have-you) to your eye?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

Although, I´m still not sure if I like the character in the suit, current Robin. They took out short shorts and put black suit under robin top part and gave him boots which are actually safe to step on the window glass he just crashed through. I really like hooded cloak too.

The Green Ranger costume redesign from Super Power Beat Down “Green Ranger vs Ryu”. I generally prefer the original costumes when it comes to Power Rangers or Super Sentai, but I thought that unofficial redesign was actually better than the original. Same with their White Ranger from an earlier episode.

On the official side, I really enjoyed the updated version of the Enterprise interior from the recent Star Trek movies. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Enterprise of TOS, but the interior used in the new movies looked beautifully futuristic while still retaining a general feel of what the TOS Enterprise looked like. I might have issues with the movies, but the look of the future tech isn’t really one of them.

I really think Miles Morales’ Spider-Man costume is a striking and fitting design for the theme of the character. While it is the first legit costume for a legacy character, i consider it a redesign as he takes up the name Spider-Man after Peter Parker’s death.

The stark black caught my eye as proper memorial to PP’s Death, as one would for a funeral etc. and the reverse red on black webbing, while it sucks to draw, is a phenomenal touch.

Moon Knight’s Mr. Knight suit/outfit. He looks stylish yet there is still something off and terrifying about him.
