The 1932 MGM classic, Tarzan the Ape Man, which featured Johnny Wiessmuller as the title character, has only one known Style D one sheet/poster still in existence. That poster goes on the auction block later this month.
Heritage Auction kicks off the Vintage Movie Poster Auction on November 21st, and over the 48 hour window, fans can bid on the Tarzan the Ape Man poster, or an Italian 2 foglio post war release of Casablanca – often considered the best poster for the film, or any number of other movies from the golden age of Hollywood.
“I was floored when I saw the only known Style D one sheet poster for 1932’s Tarzan the Ape Man, as well as an impressive one sheet of Mickey’s Mellerdrammer from 1933,” said Grey Smith, director of Vintage Posters at Heritage.
Since no recent Tarzan posters have been auctioned, it’s estimated that the poster could go for as little as $40,000 to as high as $80,000 (or more).
Additional highlights include, but are not limited to:
- King Kong (RKO, 1933). Swedish Oversized Poster (25″ X 47″), est. $15,000+.
- Scarface (United Artist, 1932) Half Sheet (22” X 28”), $15,000+.
- Mickey Mouse – Alpine Climbers (United Artists, 1936). Poster (40″ X 60″), est. $15,000+.
- Notorious (RKO, 1946). Italian 2-Foglio (39″ X 54.25″) est. $10,000+.
- Oswald the Lucky Rabbit in Great Guns! (Universal, 1927). One Sheet (27″ X 41″) est. $8,000+.
- While Heritage Auctions typically have high priced items for fans to grab, Smith notes that this is an auction for advanced collectors, which makes sense since there are so many forgeries and knock offs of these posters floating around.
