Major Spoilers Staff Picks for November 4, 2015 #NCBD

Stephen SchleicherBy Stephen SchleicherNovember 4, 2015Updated:November 4, 20158 Mins Read

IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

ARTROF3coverATOMIC ROBO AND THE RING OF FIRE #3
    Writer: Brian Clevinger

Artist: Scott Wegener

Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99

SOLICITATION: At this point you’re reading this new Atomic Robo adventure or you’re not. If you are. good news – we now feature GIANT robots.

STEPHEN: Read it as a webcomic, read it as a digital download, and read it as a physical copy. Three time the Robo, three times the story, three times the fun! You can thank me later.

WAYNE: As per usual, Atomic Robo is one of the most enjoyable comics on the stands today! If you’re a long-time Robo fan or considering jumping on, get into this miniseries! If you need to, buy and download the first two online! They’re so worth it!

    Citizen Jack_1_coverCITIZEN JACK #1
    Writer: Sam Humphries
    Artist: Tommy Patterson
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A HORROR-COMEDY FOR ANYONE WHO HATES POLITICS!
Every presidential candidate has a skeleton in their closet—Jack Northworthy worships the devil! A scandal-plagued small town politician, Jack should in no way be president. But he’s got a secret weapon: Marlinspike, a malevolent demon of high ambitions. Together, they’re running for president in an outrageous campaign that America will never forget! Blockbuster writer SAM HUMPHRIES (Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men: Black Vortex) and New York Times bestselling artist TOMMY PATTERSON (Game of Thrones) debut a brand new ONGOING SERIES with a DIABOLICAL EXTRA-SIZED FIRST ISSUE!

CHRIS: A horror-comedy for anyone who hates politics? They might have well written “Hey Chris, read this! You’ll like it!” Anything that takes a good jab, or straight up knock-out punch, at politics is right up my ally. This looks so good in so many ways. No matter your political views, I think we can all agree that there are at least a few politicians that are worshipping the devil. I mean, c’mon…

    deadpool1DEADPOOL #1
    Writer: Gerry Duggan
    Artist: Mike Hawthorne
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: He’s annoying. He’s dangerous. He smells terrible. But the public love him. That’s right-the Merc with the Mouth may make money for missions of murky morality…but he’s become the most popular hero in the world for it. Eat that, Spidey! The world belongs to…DEADPOOL. The fan favorite team of Gerry Duggan and Mike Hawthorne return to bring Deadpool in to his most successful adventures yet!

GEORGE: Gerry Duggan’s run on Deadpool has been the best in recent memory, and the death and rebirth of the Marvel universe cannot stop it.

    DComicscoverDETECTIVE COMICS #46

Writer: Peter J. Tomasi

Artist: Marcio Takara

Cover Artist: Andrew Robinson

Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: For the first time since taking on the mantle of Batman, Jim Gordon has left Gotham City. But he’s not alone! Recruited by the Justice League, Gordon taps into his detective skills to help Superman, Wonder Woman, and the World’s Greatest Heroes solve the murder of a mysterious, super-powered being.

WAYNE: I like this new team on Detective, although I’ve enjoyed just about every creator here since the new #1 was released. Mr. Tomasi knows Batman very well, so it’s going to be a (good) bumpy ride!

    doctorstrangeDOCTOR STRANGE #2
    Writer: Jason Aaron
    Artist: Chris Bachalo
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: • Take a tour of Doctor Strange’s home– the Sancto Sanctorum. It’s the weirdest and most dangerous place in the Marvel Universe! A place where opening the wrong door can unleash hell on Earth.
    • Unfortunately for you and your fellow visitor, Zelma, Strange’s house is infested with something far worse than bed bugs!

GEORGE: My favorite new title so far of the post-Secret Wars status quo. Bachalo’s art is a great fit for the character and concept.

    drax-1-cover-155269DRAX #1
Writer: CM Punk, Cullen Bunn (A/CA)
    Artist: Scott Hepburn
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Drax the Destroyer is the muscle for the Guardians of the Galaxy, but what does he do when he’s not adventuring through space with the Guardians? He lets his bloodthirsty quest for revenge take the pilot seat, of course! Determined to find and kill Thanos once and for all, Drax is ready to take on the universe. But when you’re tooling around the universe in a ship aptly named “The Space Sucker”, an unwavering desire for bloodshed isn’t enough to keep a mission from derailing. Drax crash lands into his wildest adventures ever, encountering foes no one will ever expect! The depths of space may not be big enough to contain this much grit, vengeance and all-out action!

MATTHEW: Drax is a character I’ve found interesting before. CM Punk is a pretty solid story-teller, as is Cullen Bunn. The art looks intriguing. This one’s a no-brainer from my perspective, especially if you take into account the character’s long history and ties to the Marvel U.

    inhumansTHE HUMANS #9
    Writer: Keenan Keller
    Artist: Tom Neely
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: A bloody ride of vengeance is filled with the bodies of friends and foes alike as Johnny takes The HUMANS with him down the road to hell.
Major Plot Point: Many characters die.

GEORGE: I believe that this is the last issue, although there have been some rumblings of future mini-series and such. I hope so, because the Humans is just too gross, unique and excellent to die – although if it must go, it will go as it lived, with a helluva show.

    james bondJAMES BOND #1
    Writer: Warren Ellis
    Artist: Jason Masters
    Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Beginning “VARGR”, the first story in the ongoing James Bond comic series by best-selling writer Warren Ellis! James Bond returns to London after a mission of vengeance in Helsinki, to take up the workload of a fallen 00 Section agent. But something evil is moving through the back streets of the city, and sinister plans are being laid for Bond in Berlin…

MATTHEW: James Bond and Warren Ellis are both things I’m casually fans of, and both things that can be problematic for similar reasons. This has all the makings of a match made in heaven, but regardless, I’m interested to see whether Ellis can make the quintessential super-spy as interesting as his past forays into the genre…

STEPHEN: There are a lot of surprise books hitting stores this week, and like the good spy he is, James Bond #1 slipped under my radar until the very last minute. Can’t wait to see how Ellis takes his style and applies it to the iconic character. It will be interesting to see if Ellis follows the Bond from the books or the Bond from the movies.

    Klaus1coverKLAUS #1

Writer: Grant Morrison

Artist: Scott Kolins

Publisher: BOOM! Studios
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Set in a dark fantastic past of myth and magic, Klaus tells the story of how Santa Claus really came to be. Where did he begin? What was he like when he was young? Why does he do what he does? How does he do what he does? And what happens when he faces his greatest challenge? Drawing on Santa Claus’ wilder roots in Viking lore and Siberian shamanism-taking in the creepier side of Christmas, and characters like the sinister Krampus-Klaus is a “Santa Claus: Year One.”

STEPHEN: Read it as a interesting take on the Santa Claus tale, or go down the rabbit hole and look at all of the hidden messages scattered throughout the issue. Drugs and music and toys, oh my!

WAYNE: What, you thought Mr. Morrison would keep Santa a pudgy, ho-ho-ho of a guy? Fat chance! Mr. Morrison reworks the Claus as he does best, dark and powerful. I like what I’ve seen so far, and since we’re entering the holiday season, what better way to kick things off than this comic? Go-go-go for it!

    Unfollow_1_coverUNFOLLOW #1
    Writer: Rob Williams
    Artist: Michael Dowling
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A dying social media mogul leaves his billions to be split evenly between 140 random people-or however many of them are still alive at the moment of his death. Rob Williams (MARTIAN MANHUNTER, THE ROYALS: MASTERS OF WAR) and Michael Dowling (Death Sentence) assemble a cast that includes a young black man trying to get by in St. Louis, an Iranian reporter in need of hope, a retired special forces soldier with a strange sense of purpose, and a thrill-seeking heiress, in this thriller that shows we’re all still part of the food chain.

CHRIS: This premise sounds fascinating and I’m excited to see this one play out. Vertigo has a ton of cool stuff coming out and it just keeps getting better. I really liked Dowling’s work on Death Sentence so I know the book will at least be pretty.

MATTHEW: Another compelling premise, one that is so weird and on-the-nose that I’ve been thinking this was an Image book. If the story can live up to the hook, this could be pretty amazing.
