Major Spoilers Comic Book Recommendations for July 29, 2015

Stephen SchleicherBy Stephen SchleicherJuly 29, 20156 Mins Read

    IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY!

    But what to read?

The staff at Major Spoilers offers up its list of books they are looking forward to, and recommend you do, too!

    Batgirl42coverBATGIRL #42

Writers: Cameron Stewart, Brendan Fletcher
    Artist: Babs Tarr
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Batgirl can barely hold her own in combat against the new Batman… so what happens when Livewire joins the fight with the intention of taking them both out?

WAYNE: The word I keep finding myself using with the new Batgirl team is “fresh.” I like the more modern, younger feel since it suits the character. If you’re not reading this title, you really should be!

    BatgirlAnn3coverBATGIRL ANNUAL #3
    Writers: Cameron Stewart, Brendan Fletcher
    Artist: Bengal

Publisher: DC Comics

Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: On her latest mission, Batgirl finds herself mixing it up with Helena Bertinelli of Spyral…but who is the mysterious Spyral agent who seems to be one step ahead of her at every turn without ever showing his face? She’s determined to crack this mystery – but Grayson is just as determined not to get caught! Plus: Batgirl visits Gotham Academy – and there are plenty of surprises in store for her!

WAYNE: This issue ties Batgirl in to more of the Bat-verse, so it should be fun to see her interact with Grayson and Gotham Academy. Hey, you get the monthly title, you should get the annual, too!

    Sabrina4CoverCHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA #4
    Writer: Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa
    Artist: Robert Hack
    Publisher: Archie Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: There are some things in this world that mortal eyes should never witness — that’s a lesson poor Harvey Kinkle will learn the hard way, when he makes the unfortunate mistake of intruding on the darkest of ceremonies — an offense that the witches’ coven takes very seriously. Though Harvey’s life hangs in the balance, it is the Spellman family that will come face-to-face with true evil. Indeed, the choices made by teen-witch-in-training Sabrina on this dread night will determine the fate of every living soul in Greendale.

MATTHEW: When they say chilling aventures, they are NOT kidding… Well worth a look for horror aficionados.

    DonaldDuck_03-1DONALD DUCK #3
Writers: Giorgio Pezzin, Thad Komorowski, Al Taliaferro
    Artists: Giorgio Cavazzano, Al Taliaferro
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
SOLICITATION: “The Siege of Nothing Atoll”—when an island-dwelling mad scientist sics his super-weapons on Scrooge’s Money Bin, it’s up to Donald to take the bad guy down!

RODRIGO: I’ve been hearing good things about Donald Duck (the comic, I’m familiar with the character, you guys, sheesh.), so I’m interested to see how this is shaping up.

    GB-GR02-cvr-659x1000GHOSTBUSTERS GET REAL #2
    Writer: Erik Burnham
    Artist: Dan Schoening
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: THEY’RE ALL REAL NOW! While the boys in gray meet the boys in brown, blue, green and tan, Proteus hunts through the multiverse for his quarry… and finds something Extreme. (Was that too subtle a hint?)

ROB: More Ghostbusting goodness coming, with twice the busters as before. This whole reality hopping thing has actually become quite entertaining on the spooky front.

    gothambymidnightannualGOTHAM BY MIDNIGHT ANNUAL #1
    Writer: Rey Fawkes
    Artist: Christian Duce Fernandez
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $4.99
    Cover Image URL:
SOLICITATION: Get set for a tale of love and vengeance in this centuries-old mystery for the Midnight Shift – and the Gentlemen Ghost!

MATTHEW: Thanks to Kurt Busiek (lemme just pick up that name I dropped, there) all I can think of when I read this book is The Beastie Boys.

    NO! SLEEP! TIL! ARKHAM! (ARKHAM!)

    Help-Us-Great-Warrior_06_A_MainHELP US GREAT WARRIOR #6

WAYNE: I really love this book! If you enjoy creative sci-fi as much as I do, this is the title for you! It’s great!

    RSv2-17-Cov-A-FrisonRED SONJA #17
    Writer: Gail Simone
    Artist: Walter Geovani
    Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99

What happens when the mightiest warrior finds the man who destroyed her life? Can even RED SONJA return from darkness this complete? Continuing the suspenseful FORGIVENESS OF MONSTERS storyline, taking Sonja to places she has never, ever been before!

STEPHEN: THIS IS THE BOOK TO GET THIS WEEK! ACCEPT NO OTHER COMICS UNTIL RED SONJA #17 HAS FILLED YOUR HEART AND MIND! GAIL SIMONE AND WALTER GEOVANI ARE THE KINDEST, BRAVEST, WARMEST MOST WONDERFUL PEOPLE I’VE EVER KNOWN!

residentalienRESIDENT ALIEN, THE SAM HAIN MYSTERY #1

    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Seeking the truth behind a decades-old murder in the seemingly sleepy town of Patience, Washington, the stranded alien known as Dr. Harry Vanderspeigel learns a few lessons in human nature and forgiveness. A unique science-fiction/murder-mystery mash-up by creators Peter Hogan (Tom Strong) and Steve Parkhouse (Milkman Murders)!

RODRIGO: I did an early review of this on the MSP, even though I wasn’t crazy about it, it’s still worth picking up.

    tmnt48TMNT ONGOING #48
    Writer: Tom Waltz, Kevin Eastman
    Artist: Mateus Santolouco
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Turtles take the fight to Baxter Stockman as both Karai and Shredder plan their final moves!

ROB: The Turtles story is ramping up to what looks like a massively climactic conclusion and, while I’ll be sad to see it go, I am stoked to see what happens going forward.

    thors2THORS #2
    Writer: Jason Aaron
    Artist: Chris Sprouse
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The saga of the Battleworld police force continues! More murders. More mystery. More Thors! (Like GROOT THOR!) And maybe even a break in the case, as a surprising suspect is brought in for questioning…

ROB: I’m not usually one for the police procedural style stories, but when the police are all different Thors, well that is a lot more entertaining. The first issue was interesting, and I’m curious to see where this story takes us.
