Major Spoilers Staff Picks for July 22, 2015

Robot OverlordBy Robot OverlordJuly 22, 20155 Mins Read

    IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY!

    But what to read?

The staff at Major Spoilers offers up its list of books they are looking forward to, and recommend you do, too!

    Cyborg1coverpickoftheweekCYBORG #1
    Writer: David F. Walker
    Artist: Joe Prado, Ivan Reis
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: The machine that gives Cyborg his powers is evolving! The only problem is that machine is his body and he has no idea what’s causing these changes!

ROB: When Cyborg finally got his time on the big leagues he became the most under-utilized member of the team. Now that he’s getting his own book I’m really hoping that changes and am looking forward to Vic finally getting his own stories.

WAYNE: This series has been low-hanging fruit that DC should have picked years ago. I’ve enjoyed this character since New Teen Titans debuted. Looking forward to it!

    FIght CLub 2_3FIGHT CLUB 2 #3
    Writer: Chuck Palahniuk
    Artist: Cameron Stewart
    Publisher: Dark Horse
    Cover Price: $3.99

SOLICITATION: Tyler’s been around a lot longer than anyone realized . . . To gain admittance to the current generation of Project Mayhem, Marla is more than happy to provide Sebastian with plenty of bruises, and thus, the search for their son begins . . .

CHRIS: It’s the sequel I didn’t know I wanted until I started reading it! Seeing these characters years later and miserable in all new ways is so entertaining, and Tyler Durden running the world is a bit terrifying. I’m enjoying this immensely, though I would like to have gotten this in book form. With Cameron Stewart artwork, I can let that slide.

JBDFDT6coverJIM BUTCHER DRESDEN FILES DOWN TOWN #6 OF 6
    Writer: Jim Butcher, Mark Powers
    Artist: Carlos E. Gomez
    Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Chaos has been unleashed deep beneath the streets of Chicago – and now it threatens to erupt into the world above! Harry’s formed a tentative alliance with longtime nemesis “Gentleman” Johnny Marcone, but even their combined strength may not be enough to stop the Golem and its malign creator. That is, not without one of them being willing to make the ultimate sacrifice…

WAYNE: As a big fan of the Dresden Files novels, I love these shorter stories that fill in the gaps between the longer tales. If you enjoy Mr. Butcher’s books, I highly recommend these comics!

    Marvel Zombies_2MARVEL ZOMBIES #2
    Writer: Simon Spurrier
    Artist: Kev Walker
    Publisher: Marvel
    Cover Price: $3.99

SOLICITATION: Stranded in the Deadlands and saddled with a mysterious child, Elsa Bloodstone is determined to traverse the zombie-ridden landscape and get home.
But haunted by ghosts from her past-including visions of her stern father, Ulysses Bloodstone – Elsa begins to realize it may not be the zombies she fears most!

CHRIS: I was so skeptical about this book before I read the first issue, but man was it insanely good. It’s Elsa Bloodstone being a b!@ch and kicking some zombie butt, all portrayed in Kev Walker’s wonderful art style. What else do you need? Seriously fun stuff.

    Prez_2PREZ #2
    Writer: Mark Russell
    Artist: Ben Caldwell
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99

SOLICITATION: With the election in chaos and a Congress mired in corruption, Twitter sensation @corndoggirl becomes the first teenaged President of the United States!

CHRIS: This book is awesome, don’t let anyone tell you different. I’ve been made fun of so much at the store for liking it but I don’t care. There’s some great social commentary concerning social media and society’s short attention span. It’s all presented in a funny package with unique art and is something truly different on the racks.

    spiderwoman9SPIDER-WOMAN #9
    Writer: Dennis Hopeless
    Artist: Javier Rodriguez
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Jessica Drew might have solved the first mystery Ben Urich threw her way, but he’s got one or two more cases up his sleeve from other cities in the U.S. of A! It’s a road trip with Spider-Woman, Ben Urich and the Porcupine! Destination: Justice.

ROB: Spider-Woman has been great so far, and the road-trip idea just sounds like fun, especially with the D-list villain tagging along.

    TMNT_CA02_cvr-659x1000TMNT CASEY & APRIL #2
    Writer: Mariko Tamaki
    Artist: Irene Koh
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Casey and April struggle to keep their relationship afloat as they look for answers in the desert. Someone is striving to cut their journey short—the Rat King!

ROB: So far, so good. And the first issue ended with the most underused character in the current TMNT run. This should be an interesting look at what happens when the Turtles can’t intervene.

    Transformers_43TRANSFORMERS #43
    Writer: John Barber
    Artist: Andrew Griffith
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99

SOLICITATION: COSMOS UNLEASHED! A misunderstood AUTOBOT. A DECEPTICON space station. Cut off from their allies, SOUNDWAVE and COSMOS come face to face alone.

CHRIS: You had me at Cosmos unleashed…

    ZP4coverZENITH HC PHASE FOUR
    Writer: Grant Morrison
    Artist: Steve Yeowell

Publisher: Rebellion/2000 AD
    Cover Price: $25.00
SOLICITATION: With the Lloigor defeated nothing can stand in the way of the superhumans and universal domination! The remaining members of the original British super-team Cloud 9 with some additional powered affiliates (including Zenith’s infant son) have destroyed America in retaliation for an attempt on their lives. Now they plan to incubate in the sun and evolve to the next level of existence, destroying the Earth as they do so. Once again Zenith and St. John must make a stand for humanity and this time it’s personal! Grant Morrison (WE3) and Steve Yeowell (Devlin Waugh) bring you the mind-blowing finale to one of the most celebrated series in British comics.

WAYNE: Can’t wait to complete my collection! This was a groundbreaking series, and to have it in such great volumes is terrific! Don’t miss it!
