Major Spoilers Staff Picks for May 13, 2015 (#NCBD)

Stephen SchleicherBy Stephen SchleicherMay 13, 20157 Mins Read

    IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY!

    But what to read?

Fortunately, the Major Spoilers Staff have comic book recommendations for you!

    BR7coverScore-CardBIRTHRIGHT #7
    Writer: Joshua Williamson

Artists: Andrei Bressan
    Publisher: Image Comics

Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: The brothers will need all the survival skills Mikey learned in Terrenos to stay alive in the wilderness. What has followed them there?

WAYNE: If you see a comic with Joshua Williamson’s name on it, buy it! You’ll be picking up a great read! I’ve loved this comic since it started, so I highly recommend it!

    CONV_JLI_2_54d96207cd5d48.54625981CONVERGENCE JUSTICE LEAGUE INTL #2
    Writer: Ron Marz
    Artist: Mike Manley
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: STARRING HEROES FROM ZERO HOUR! Is it time to say goodbye to Ted Kord and Martian Manhunter forever? It is if the heroes of the Kingdom Come universe have anything to say about it!

ROB: Ted Kord has been one of my favorite characters since first reading one of his adventures in OMAC Project. Every chance to get a new story with him is fantastic, and this has been one of the best.

    harrowHARROW COUNTY #1
    Writer: Cullen Bunn
    Artist:Tyler Crook
    Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
    Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: This town will make your skin crawl!

Emmy always knew that the deep, dark woods surrounding her home crawled with ghosts, goblins, and zombies. But on the eve of her eighteenth birthday, she learns that she is connected to these creatures—and to the land itself—in a way she never imagined.

Don’t miss the first issue of this southern gothic fairy tale from the creator of smash hit The Sixth Gun, beautifully and hauntingly realized by B.P.R.D.’s Tyler Crook!

RODRIGO: This series has a good pedigree going in, I’m interested in the premise too. I am this book’s fan to lose.

    Injection-01-f7a0dINJECTION #1
    Writer: Warren Ellis
Artist: DeClan Shalvie & Jordie Bellaire
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Once upon a time, there were five crazy people, and they poisoned the 21st Century. Now they have to deal with the corrosion to try and save us all from a world becoming too weird to support human life.

GEORGE: Ellis and Shavley did excellent work on their all too abbreviated run on Moon Knight. If anyone can depict a world too weird to support human life, it’s them.

MATTHEW: I don’t know what this is gonna be like…
    But I wanna read it.

26345ITTY BITTY COMICS: GRIMMISS ISLAND #3
    Writer: Art Baltazar, Franco
    Artist: Art Baltazar
    Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
    Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: HADES IS KICKIN’ UP A FUSS!

Grimmiss’s old pals the Grimm Reaper and B. L. Bubba Crisp are coming to visit the island! The boys are excited to see what Grimmiss has been up to, but time may be running out for the little skull head!

RODRIGO: I had some issues with the first Grimmiss Island, but some of them may have been because I had no frame of reference, I’m interested in reading more to see if I was just reading too much into things.

    LK5coverLADY KILLER #5 of 5

Writer/Artist: Joelle Jones

Co-Writer: Jamie S. Rich
    Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
    Cover Price: $3.50
SOLICITATION: Josie closes in on the truth behind who really wants to end her life as a cheerful housewife, mother, and ruthlessly skilled assassin! Who is really behind the hit? And are they closer to home than she’d like?

WAYNE: This terrific miniseries comes to a great conclusion! Based in the 1960s, this book has been a real treat and meets my needs for variety in reading!

    TM1coverTHE MANTLE #1
    Writer: Ed Brisson
    Artists: Brian Level

Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Robbie never asked for any of this. While drunkenly walking home from a punk show, he’s hit with lightning and wakes to find that he’s been chosen as the new host for The Mantle, a power set of unimaginable scope. Despite his lack of interest, he’s forced into action. The Plague, a being who has spent 50 years killing every previous host of The Mantle, is already coming for him.

WAYNE: I always love it when creators come up with new ways to explore superheroes, and this book does just that! And there’s an amazing surprise at the end you won’t want to miss! Now’s the perfect time to jump on this new title, something I’ll be enjoying for months to come!

    nightnurseNIGHT NURSE #1
    Writer: Jean Thomas
    Artist: Win Mortimer
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $7.99
SOLICITATION: Marvel’s 1970s cult-classic miniseries is collected in one super-sized one-shot! Linda Carter, Georgia Jenkins and Christine Palmer are all studying to become nurses. But what will happen when Linda must choose between love and career?

MATTHEW: Hey, enjoying that Daredevil show? Here’s the backstory on one of my favorite characters in it! Also: In the 1970s, they didn’t have “miniseries.” This book just got cancelled after four issues…

STEPHEN: Ah, so this isn’t a new series, but rather something that would make a great Retro Review… still, those who are excited about Rosario Dawson as Night Nurse are going to be in for a surprise. Still gonna read this though.

    rebesREBELS #2
    Writer: Brian Wood
    Artist: Andrea Mutti
    Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: While Seth Abbott patrols the New England forests with his militia, his new bride Mercy holds down the home front. But whatever honeymoon period the growing American Revolution affords them is cut short when Seth and Ezekiel go on a daring nighttime raid determined to deny the British access down the Hudson River.

GEORGE: Rebels #1 lived up to my high expectations. I had hoped Brian Wood would rediscover his form on a bit of historical fiction, and issue #1 felt like he had. Plus, it had Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys, one of the coolest named militias of all time.

    Saga_28-1SAGA #28
    Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
    Artist: Fiona Staples
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
    SOLICITATION: Alana acts.

ROB: Saga has been great since issue one and I still see no reason why everybody isn’t picking this book up.

    spaceraidersSPACE RIDERS #2
    Writer: Fabian Rangel
    Artist: Alexis Ziritt
    Publisher: Black Mask Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: After the mind shattering events of Vortex of Madness, the Space Riders find themselves crash-landed on an unknown planet. They encounter an alien warrior tribe, as well as the beautiful and fierce Dona Barbara. Also in this issue, our heroes find themselves in the presence of a Space God. Ride along as Capitan Peligro and his crew escape from the haunted planet!

GEORGE: The first issue of this is one of the most acid-drenched, wondrous things I’ve read in some time. For wild, psychedelic space nonsense, look no further.

RODRIGO: Space Riders is a series that constantly makes me ask myself “Is this a very clever person writing a purposefully juvenile story, or is this a very juvenile writer writing a surprisingly clever story?”

    pickoftheweekThor-8-Cover-a3c3bTHOR #8
    Writer: Jason Aaron
    Artist: Russell Dauterman
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: This is it! The answer you’ve all been waiting for! The identity of Thor, Goddess of Thunder, finally revealed! Who is this mysterious heroine with the might of Mjolnir in her hands?

MATTHEW: There are a lot of possible candidates for the woman under the helm… I’m looking forward to reading and seeing if my guess is right.

ROB: This is going to be one of the bigger titles this week with the huge reveal and all. I still have to point it out that this has been a phenomenal read so far and the reveal should be great.

STEPHEN: I think we all know who is under the helmet, but the question that will need to be answered is what made her worthy to wield the hammer?
