Sony has announced it is moving ahead with its next Spider-Man movie – in animated form.
The animated Spider-Man movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 20, 2018 and is being directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The duo have another popular movie franchise under their belts as they directed The Lego Movie for Warner Bros., 21 and 22 Jump Street, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
According to the press release, the animated movie will not be part of the cinematic Spider-Man universe.
Spider-Man will next appear in a live-action Marvel film from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Manfranchise, on July 28, 2017, a live-action film being produced by Kevin Feige at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. The animated film from Lord & Miller, dated July 20, 2018, has Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Pascal also serving as producers.
With Sony and Marvel sharing Spider-Man, look for a lot more of the wall crawler in coming years, as both companies look to maximize profits on the character.
