During a recent recording session (I think it was the Major Spoilers Podcast, but we’ve had a pretty heavy recording schedule of late), we got to talking about Andrew Garfield and how some folks feel bad for him for no longer being the chosen Spider-Man. My response was that he gets to go home to America’s Sweetheart, so I’m sure he won’t be broken up about it for long. The concept of “America’s Sweetheart” is a nebulous and ultimately meaningless title, but one thing is for sure: You know we aren’t getting through today’s discussion without the name “Ashley Williams” popping up. My personal peccadilloes aside, there are a number of actors who have been somehow crowned a national crush, including Mr. Garfield’s long-time companion Emma Stone, once-and-future Mystique Jennifer Lawrence, and the entertainment powerhouse known mononymically as Beyonce, leading us to today’s entirely subjective query…
The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) will make a strong case for Salma Hayek defining the term in the 1990s, but still finds Clara Bow to be an incredibly lovely woman, asking: Who’s the first person to pop into your head when you hear the somewhat silly term ‘America’s Sweetheart’?

That one girl from the thing. You know, the one with the hair and the face? She wore those clothes that one time?
Oh… you are thinking of Margret Thatcher… not relevant to this QotD ;)
Oh, her? Naaah, she’s a little too… Y’know.? But the other one, who wore that thing?
Yowza.
Gidget.
Gotta agree with Alisha. Definitely her. She totally sparkles in that scene about 30 ,om. in, opposite that guy.
Stephen Colbert.
Melissa Joan Hart is at the top of my list. With Leah Remini close behind( particularly when she was a guest star on Saved be the Bell).
