Major Spoilers Staff Picks for February 4, 2015

Robot OverlordBy Robot OverlordFebruary 4, 20159 Mins Read

    IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY!

    But what to read?

Fortunately, the Major Spoilers Staff have comic book recommendations for you!

    Ant Man 2_coverANT-MAN #2
    Writer: Nick Spencer
    Artist: Mark Brooks
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Ant-Man’s starting a new life– a bold new adventure– and you know what that means… He needs to borrow some money! Also, an old enemy returns… kinda. Sorta. Maybe?

CHRIS: Incredible. Absolutely fantastic. There aren’t enough adjectives for me to describe my love of this book. Who can’t love a book where Ant-Man watches a movie with his daughter using a cell phone as a wide screen TV? A heartless S.O.B., that’s who. Seriously, buy this comic.

ROB: First issue was good and I was thoroughly looking forward to the direction it was taking, until the end. However, Cassie being back sounds even more fun than what the story looked like, so here we go.

STEPHEN: WOW! I was so blown away with the first issue, that debating on whether to pick up this issue is a real no-brainer. Nick Spencer’s take on the character, infused with humor and emotion, and Mark Brooks on art make this a must read for me this week.

    Brainstorm6coverBRAINSTORM #6

Writers: Jeffrey Morris, Ira Livingston

Artist: Dennis Calero
    Publisher: Future Dude Entertainment

Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The final battle ensues in the Man-Vs-Nature-Vs-Man saga of Brainstorm. Having reunited with his old friend David, Dr. Cale Issaacs and the ‘Nado Ninjas make their way to Devil’s Tower where they will directly confront the terrifying intelligence of Hurricane Brandon in the thrilling climax.

WAYNE: This first story arc is coming to a close, and I’m anxious to see how it all wraps up. Should be as mind-bending as this book has been so far! I’m sure there’s a trade coming soon, so if you haven’t jumped on board yet, keep an eye out for the collected edition!

    Bunker9-1-f6f14BUNKER #9
    Writer: Joshua Hale Fialkov
    Artist: Joe Infurnari
    Publisher: Oni Press, Inc.
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: With a second bomb set to destroy Los Angeles, Grady and Billy must find it and stop it before more die. There is no turning back now. The Future is Here.

ASHLEY: The deeper into the mystery of the Bunker we get with each issue the more I fall in love with this series. Every detail Fialkov gives us feels like a tiny reward amidst the sea of time travel.

    Feathers2coverFEATHERS #2

Writer & Artist: Jorge Corona
    Publisher: BOOM! Studios

Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Fresh from their near-miss escape from the Guards, Bianca and Poe strike a deal: If he guides her through the treacherous Maze, she will take him to see the White Guide, a feathered statue in the City that may hold the key to Poe’s origins. It’s an adventure that will take them from the lowest shadows to the highest rooftops, with untold dangers along the way … and not everyone in the Maze is happy about their new alliance.

STEPHEN: I thought the first issue was really solid, and though I think I know what direction this Beauty and The Beast tale is moving, I still want to see what happens next. The art is simply stunning, and I enjoy stepping into this type of world ever so often.

WAYNE: I really loved the first issue of this six-issue miniseries, can’t wait for this issue to continue this engaging story. The book is something the entire family can enjoy, so I highly recommend it!

    hawkeye21HAWKEYE #21
    Writer: Matt Fraction
    Artist: Annie Wu
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
    SOLICITATION: The Finale, Part 1:
    • David. Clint. Barney. The Building. The Tracksuit Draculas. The Clown.
    • Ever seen “Rio Bravo?” Check it out, it’s pretty good.

GEORGE: Man. It’s been awhile, Hawkeye, but I forgive you. And unlike some folks around these parts, I like Rio Bravo. This series has had a good run. Let’s see it go out on a high note.

    Imperium1coverIMPERIUM #1

Writer: Joshua Dysart

Artist: Doug Braithwaite
    Publisher: Valiant Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A daring new superhero saga from New York Times best-selling creator Joshua Dysart – writer of the Harvey-Award nominated series Harbinger – and superstar artist Doug Braithwaite (Unity, Justice)!

Tony Harada is the most dangerous human being on the planet. Imbued with incredible powers of the mind, he has spent his life guiding humanity from the shadows. But today he is a wanted man. His powers are public knowledge, his allies have turned to enemies, and he is hunted by every government on the planet.

Instead of surrendering, Harada has one last unthinkable gambit to play; to achieve more, faster, and with less, he will build a coalition of the powerful, the unscrupulous and the insane. No longer content to demand a better future, he will recruit a violent legion from the darkest corners of the Earth to fight for it. The battle for utopia begins now.

WAYNE: Valiant always delivers fascinating storytelling, and this one has me really intrigued! Harada has always been one of the company’s most puzzling “hero’s,” so I’m really interested to see just what they have in mind for the supergroup he’s putting together!

    lady killer 2LADY KILLER #2
Writers: Joëlle Jones and Jamie S. Rich
    Artist: Joëlle Jones
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.50
SOLICITATION: Josie’s life grows more complicated than ever. Between the demands of her family life (including her disapproving mother-in-law), the challenges of performing as a ruthless assassin, and being underestimated by the men she works for, how can she do it all-and make it look so good? o A new original series! ‘Lady Killer is a killer cool book with one of my favorite artist/writer teams at the top of their game. It’s an exciting and unique take on the whole midcentury-modern vibe, with one great surprise after another! And the colors are really nifty too!’-Mike Allred

ASHLEY: Lady Killer #1 was awesome, dark and a fascinating piece of Americana. I can’t wait to see more badass lady assassinations!

    namelessNAMELESS #1
    Writer: Grant Morrison
    Artist: Chris Burnham, Nathan Fairbairn
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: An astronomer kills his family, then himself, leaving a cryptic warning.
A Veiled Lady hunts her victims through human nightmares.
An occult hustler known only as ‘Nameless’ is recruited by a consortium of billionaire futurists for a desperate mission.

And the malevolent asteroid Xibalba spins closer on a collision course with Earth.

But nothing is what it seems-a terrifying inhuman experiment is about to begin.

Abandon all hope and experience ultimate horror in NAMELESS.

GEORGE: I love astronauts and those are the dopest astronauts I have ever seen. Morrison and Burnham are two creators who work great together. Morrison has been on a hot streak lately, and I’m very interested in seeing if Nameless can keep it going.

Return of Deadpool_1-coverRETURN OF THE LIVING DEADPOOL #1
    Writer: Cullen Bunn
    Artist: Nicole Virella
    Publisher: Marvel
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Last year, Cullen Bunn brought us NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEADPOOL, the hit tale of the Merc with the Mouth trapped in the zombie apocalypse. In the end, our hero found a ‘cure’ of sorts to this horrible outbreak-any zombie that ate Deadpool transformed…into another Deadpool. And they lived happily ever after? Not so fast, as Cullen Bunn returns, joined by the amazing artwork of Nicole Virella, to let us know that wandering hordes of Deadpools might just be worse than flesh-hungry walking corpses.

CHRIS: Ah hell, I’ve read the rest of them. Why stop now?

    pickoftheweekSaga_25-1SAGA #25
    Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
    Artist: Fiona Staples
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Saga is back, as is almost the entire cast! And as thanks to retailers and readers for helping our audience continue to grow every new arc, Fiona Staples created an amazing wraparound cover for this action-packed issue, which is still only $2.99, the best deal in comics!

ASHLEY: Seriously, if you’re not looking forward to each issue of Saga you need to go back and pick up the first issue.

GEORGE: At long last, Seal Guy gets a cover. Breathe easy, my friends.

ROB: IT’S BACK! I have been seriously missing this series. Now that it’s finally back, you can all join in on the best series in stores right now.

    Spawn 250_coverSPAWN #250
    Writer: Todd McFarlane
    Artist: Szymon Kudranski

Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $5.99
SOLICITATION: This HUGE, TRIPLE-SIZED 250th ANNIVERSARY ISSUE marks only the second time an independent comic book has reached such a lofty number! This issue marks the cataclysmic climax in the story of the current Spawn: Jim Downing’s final struggle against his costume while the fate of New York City lies in the balance. From the ashes of that battlefield comes the long awaited return of the original Spawn: AL SIMMONS. The celebration of this anniversary issue will feature covers from TODD MCFARLANE, GREG CAPULLO (Batman), SKOTTIE YOUNG (Rocket Raccoon), JOCK (Detective Comics), SEAN MURPHY (The Wake), and PHILIP TAN (Batman and Robin)

CHRIS: Yes, it’s still going on. Ha, Ha. Say what you want about Todd McFarlane and Spawn, but you’ve got to hand it to the guy for lasting 250 issues (without renumbering too). Lots of people stopped reading Spawn long ago but it has been great recently and I suggest people pick it back up, especially with the original Spawn returning. I’m extremely excited for this, but I’ve read and collected every issue of Spawn since the beginning. Christ, I’m old…

    squirelgirlUNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL #2
    Writer: Ryan North
    Artist: Erica Henderson
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Starting college is hard enough, but now Squirrel Girl has to deal with Galactus too? The fate of the entire planet hangs in the balance, and only Squirrel Girl can save it! Also, her squirrel friend Tippy Toe. She can help too. Iron Man might show up too! Kinda, at least!

ROB: We all know it’s happened, Squirrel Girl beating Galactus, but now we actually get to see how she’s done it. Besides, Squirrel Girl is the greatest super hero ever.
