Power Rangers movie arrives July 22, 2016

    Stephen SchleicherBy Stephen SchleicherAugust 14, 2014Updated:August 14, 20144 Comments2 Mins Read

Major Spoilers’ own Matthew Peterson likes to point out that he doesn’t go to the movie theater to see a movie, but I’m going to bet sometime over the week of July 22, 2016, he’ll be in theaters to watch the Power Rangers movie.

In addition to announcing the release date for the big screen outing of the six colored team, Lionsgate has released the official synopsis of what we’ll see.

From a story by Executive Producer Roberto Orci (TRANSFORMERS, STAR TREK, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2) and screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, THOR) comes a modern reinvention of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world.

Currently, the Power Rangers movie will go up against a Guy Ritchie film from Warner Bros. and the next installment of the Bourne franchise.  This is probably the best date for the movie, as King Arthur (Ritchie’s film) and Jason Bourne are totally not kid/family oriented flicks, which means this should open strong.

Roberto Orci, who is serving as the executive producer of the project did say that the film will be in continuity with the TV series, though he didn’t elaborate on which version of the series we would see.

“Roberto Orci, who is serving as the executive producer of the project did say that the film will be in continuity with the TV series, though he didn’t elaborate on which version of the series we would see”

There has been some talk of Jason Frank (including some comments by the actor himself) expressing interest in returning to the role of the MMPR Green Ranger for a series or movies before these movies were first announced, so I’m curious if that might somehow be involved (maybe Tommy will once again become both a mentor and a member of a team of teen heroes). With how often the info for these movies mention “MMPR” specifically rather than simply “Power Rangers” in general, it seems like it could be a reasonable guess.

I haven’t really been able to see it yet. With my hearing loss (I’m legally deaf) it is pretty hard to follow anything with YouTube’s auto-captions that make me feel like I’m reading the subtitles of “Backstroke of the West” (the hilarious pirated English to Chinese to English subtitled “Revenge of the Sith”).
