Major Spoilers Staff Picks for July 16. 2014

Robot OverlordBy Robot OverlordJuly 16, 20147 Mins Read

    IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY!

    But what to read?

Fortunately, the Major Spoilers Staff have comic book recommendations for you!

atomicrobopickoftheweekATOMIC ROBO KNIGHTS OF GOLDEN CIRCLE #3
    Writer: Brian Clevinger
    Artist: Scott Wegener
    Publisher: Red Five Comics
    Cover Price: $3.50
SOLICITATION: Atomic Robo is trapped in the year 1884! Disguised as the Old West vigilante “Ironside,” he’s teamed up with the unlikely duo of outlaw Doc Holliday and U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves to stop a vast criminal empire from taking over the Old West.

ROB: Woo, more Atomic Robo, more Old West, more awesomeness. Clevinger and Wegener never fail to disappoint and I’m always happy to get more Robo goodness.

STEPHEN: Don’t ask me why we’ve had two issues in three weeks, but I’m reading the heck out of Atomic Robo, and you should too! Trapped in the past, Robo has to decide what to get involved with and why, and I can’t wait to see what Clevinger and Wegner bring to the table!

    Alex+AdaVol1ALEX + ADA Vol. 1 TP
Written by: Jonathan Luna, Sarah Vaughn
    Artist: Jonathan Luna
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $12.99
SOLICITATION: “Alex + Ada tells the story of a reluctant android owner and the ultra-realistic humanoid robot he calls Ada. Alex never thought he’d had an X5 model to begin with, but when Ada arrives in his life, he realizes he wants something more for her. A poignant and probing look at relationships.”

WAYNE: I love this series so much that I’m anxious for new readers to join in! If you haven’t given this thoughtful and timely book a try, I highly encourage you to do so!

    borderlandsBORDERLANDS FALL OF FYRESTONE #1
    Writer: Mike Neumann
    Artist: Agustin Padilla
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The epic story of Borderlands continues in part one of the new series, where fans find out what happens after Roland, Mordecai, Lilith, and Brick step out of Marcus’s bus. As soon as they arrive in the once-prosperous town of Fyrestone, they realize that Pandora is a far more dangerous planet than they first imagined. The Vault Hunters will go up against a ruthless bandit known as “Nine Toes,” but will they be able to overcome him?

ROB: Woo Borderlands! Looks like this series is going to be a retelling of the first game and we’ll get to see how the original four Vault Hunters become an actual unit. While not quite what I was expecting with the title, it’s still more from Borderlands and that’s never a problem.

    GHOST4-6-PG-00-8556fGHOST #6
    Writer: Chris Sebela
    Artist: Jan Duursema/Dan Parsons
    Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Von Ghastly’s not just a corny TV host—he’s an obsessive cult leader with a brainwashed fan club of obedient minions. What’s worse, he’s tapped into a power that allows him to physically touch Ghost! Will she be able to cancel his program before he takes her permanently off the air?

MATTHEW: A schlocky TV horror host who actually gets possessed? It’s a pretty interesting concept, and Elisa Cameron is a compelling character. Hard to believe I never cared for her previous incarnations…

Life with Archie_36_coverLIFE WITH ARCHIE #36
    Writer: Paul Kupperberg
    Artist: Pat & Tim Kennedy
    Publisher: Archie Comics
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: History is in the making in this epic finale to the acclaimed series LIFE WITH ARCHIE, as America’s most beloved character makes the ultimate sacrifice to save a friend. The unthinkable happens: Archie Andrews dies! Fans will experience an epic tale of Archie’s future sure to make headlines, generate discussion and stand as one of the most-talked about Archie stories of all time. Do not miss this game-changing tale of love, friendship and true heroism.

STEPHEN: This is it! The final moments of Archie Andrews life. Thanks to the Internet we already know how he dies, but the after effects are what I’m looking forward to seeing play out.

    robinrisesomegacoverROBIN RISES OMEGA #1
    Written by: Peter J. Tomasi
    Artist: Jonathan Glapion, Andy Kubert
    Cover: Andy Kubert
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: The hunt for Robin is over, and the battle joined! But Batman’s family feud with Ra’s al Ghul is about to erupt into something bigger when it’s interrupted by the forces of Apokolips. This epic story continues in this month’s Batman and Robin #33!”

WAYNE: I’ve been waiting for Robin in some form to return. Personally, and I never thought I’d hear myself say this, I hope it’s Damian that will stand by the Dark Knight’s side, but we’ll see. Mr. Tomasi and company have been doing an excellent job holding the fort while Robin’s gone, but it’s more than time to bring him back, no matter just who he is!

SNFAEHSTERANKO NICK FURY AGENT OF SHIELD ARTIST ED HC
    Writer: Jim Steranko
    Artist: Jim Steranko
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: Please Inquire
SOLICITATION: In the mid-1960s, Jim Steranko burst into the Marvel Age of comics in a BIG way, and the innovative, cinematic techniques he introduced in his brief tenure at The House of Ideas stand to this day as a high-water mark in the history of graphic storytelling. More than any other series, Steranko is most associated with Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. This Artist’s Edition collects the first 12 stories of Steranko’s run, from Strange Tales #151 – #162, as well as all his covers from these issues. Additionally, there will be a select number of extras presented. And, as usual, nearly all the pages have been scanned from the original art, from Steranko’s private archives.

MATTHEW: I’m not normally a “Please Inquire” kind of guy, but this is a book that I just can’t say no to. Steranko’s Fury was a revelation when I discovered it in the 80s, and it’s pretty amazing stuff even now. Go! Buy it now!

    TeenTitans1CoverTEEN TITANS #1
    Written by: Will Pfeifer
    Artist: Kenneth Rocafort
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “Red Robin, Wonder Girl, Raven, Bunker and Beast Boy step out of the shadows of the adult heroes of the DC Universe to offer bold, exciting and sometimes dangerous ideas on how to protect a world full of superpowered teenagers – any one of whom could be the next heroic figure or major villain!”

MATTHEW: New 52 number one issues are always fun, because there’s no middle ground to be had. Given how much controversy this book engendered based on only it’s stupid cover, part of my suspects it will be a trainwreck, but at least Beast Boy is green again…

WAYNE: I’ve long been a fan of the Teen Titans, and I’m hoping this new focus will give the DCU’s younger heroes a more specific focus instead of mostly being sidekicks with free time on their hands. Here’s hoping!

    tmntTMNT ONGOING #36
    Writer: Tom Waltz, Kevin Eastman
    Artist: Mateus Santolouco
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Leonardo and Splinter plan for the coming war with Shredder. As they meditate on what their true path must be, they are engulfed by darkness. And from that darkness emerges… the Rat King! Will his meddling with their minds lead to salvation or madness?

ROB: Another issue of Turtles, another easy pick for the week. We’ve had a fair number of classic characters enter the comics, and this week we get one of my favorites, the Rat King.
