Steven Universe arrives in August from KaBOOM!

    Press Release

There’s a “gem” of a comic book series coming in August! KaBOOM!, an award-winning imprint of publisher BOOM! Studios, and Cartoon Network Enterprises, the licensing and merchandising arm of the network, are pleased to announce the August launch of its newest ongoing series, STEVEN UNIVERSE.

The comic is based on the hit Cartoon Network animated series created by Rebecca Sugar, the first woman to have created her own show for the studio. Writer Jeremy Sorese (ADVENTURE TIME, ADVENTURE TIME 2014 WINTER SPECIAL) and artist Coleman Engle (Popgun) bring Steven and his friends to comics for the first time ever. Steven is a plucky kid living in a small beach community, and he also just so happens to be a member of the Crystal Gems, a group of intergalactic warriors who use their special gems to summon magical weapons to save the day.

“Steven Universe is in a league of its own,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “Rebecca has put so much of herself into the show, and that passion completely translates to the screen and the page. What Jeremy and Coleman are doing to make this comic as brilliant as the show is just remarkable.”

A comic about a boy and his friends living in a small beach community, who just happens to have magical powers and fight monsters on the side?! Fans of Adventure Time and Sailor Moon are gonna dig this series presented in a zine-like format of mini-comics, recipes, games, and more! In issue #1, their mission is finally coming to an end and Steven wants a break. The rain has been non-stop in Beach City and Steven wants to use the new sunny location of their last mission as an excuse to take a break! Only this last mission was never truly finished…

STEVEN UNIVERSE #1, which also features a sneak peek to October’s UNCLE GRANDPA comic, arrives in comic shops on August 6th with a cover price of $3.99 under Diamond order code JUN140977. The main covers are illustrated by Bridget Underwood and Andrea Fernandez, and retailer incentive covers will be available in limited quantities by Coleman Engle and Matt Cummings. A limited edition exclusive variant of the first issue illustrated by Engle will debut at Comic-Con International in San Diego. Not sure where to find your nearest comic retailer? Use comicshoplocator.com or findacomicshop.com to find one! It’s also available for order directly from boom-studios.com.
