SDCC’14: The Life and Afterlife of Archie planned for convention

Press ReleaseBy Press ReleaseJuly 14, 20147 Mins Read

    Press Release

Archie Comics, the acclaimed and bestselling comic book publisher that is home to some of the best-known pop culture creations in the world, including Archie, Jughead, Betty & Veronica, Josie & The Pussycats, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and the hit AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE series, answered the question the entire world has wondered since the company first revealed that Archie Andrews would die: how does the iconic redhead meet his final fate?

As revealed this morning, the legendary comic book character beloved by millions around the globe for over 70 years will die saving the life of friend and newly elected Senator Kevin Keller in the pages of LIFE WITH ARCHIE #36, on sale Wednesday.

The event, which has garnered worldwide attention and is the latest in a series of initiatives by the vibrant media company, serves as a metaphor for the “New” Archie Comics spearheaded by Publisher/Co-CEO Jon Goldwater, and sure to be a hot topic at this month’s Comic-Con International: San Diego.

“The Death of Archie is the biggest story in Archie Comics history – and a major milestone for comics, period,” said Goldwater. “It’s the one thing everyone wants to talk about – with good reason. LIFE WITH ARCHIE presents a possible future for the character, and this issue is a fitting end to that story. Archie dies as he lived – a hero, representing the best in all of us. The fact that he’s saving Kevin, the most important new character in Archie lore since Archie, Betty & Veronica, Jughead and Reggie – is a metaphor for the rebirth this company has experienced over the last five years. This is truly a new Archie Comics: unafraid, daring, progressive and on the cusp of greatness.”

The “Death of Archie” is but one of the publisher’s major announcements hitting in advance of this month’s Comic-Con International: San Diego – other must-see stories include news about the company’s superhero properties, a new licensed video game series launch and exclusive sneak peeks at the upcoming AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE #6 by writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and artist Francesco Francavilla and October’s SABRINA #1 from Aguirre-Sacasa and illustrator Robert Hack.

While this week’s comic-sized LIFE WITH ARCHIE #36 shows readers Archie’s final moments, #37 leaps a year into the future, showcasing how the remaining members of the Riverdale gang – including Jughead, Betty & Veronica and Reggie – have honored the legacy of their dear friend. Both stories will be collected in the double-sized LIFE WITH ARCHIE #36 magazine and upcoming trade paperback collecting the entire story, written by regular LIFE WITH ARCHIE writer Paul Kupperberg, with art by Pat & Tim Kennedy and Fernando Ruiz.

In addition to the acclaimed regular LIFE WITH ARCHIE creative team, the two comic book issues – sold exclusively at comic shops this month – will feature a pantheon of artistic luminaries contributing covers to the historic issue, including Francesco Francavilla, Fiona Staples, Ramon Perez, Walt Simonson, Jill Thompson, Mike Allred, Cliff Chiang, Adam Hughes, Tommy Lee Edwards and Alex Ross.

Archie Comics will also have an expanded presence on the show floor at Comic-Con, two must-see panels featuring hundreds of dollars in giveaways for attendees, creator signings and exclusive comics that can only be purchased at the show.
