Major Spoilers Staff Picks for April 16, 2014

Robot OverlordBy Robot OverlordApril 16, 20148 Mins Read

    It’s New Comic Book Day!

What should you pick up this week? The Major Spoilers Staff runs down the titles they are most looking forward to this week.

    pickoftheweekBatman_30_coverBATMAN #30
    Writer: Scott Snyder

Artist: Greg Capullo
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: ‘ZERO YEAR – SAVAGE CITY’ begins!

CHRIS: Forget that this is a Batman comic, this is a great comic period. Every issue I finish leaves me dying for more. I love the costume Batman’s sporting and wish it was the one he had when the New 52 started. Regardless, pick this up!

GEORGE: Snyder, Capullo and Batman – as reliable a winning combination as there ever was. I’m still in with Zero Year.

STEPHEN: NA-NA-NA-NA-NA-NA-NA-NA BATMAN! YEAR ONE! BATMAN! Damn right I’m reading the heck out of this book.

    Action-Cat-01-Art-Baltazar-d0b43CAPTAIN ACTION CAT #1
Writer: Art Baltazer, Franco, Chris “Zod” Smith
    Artist: Art Baltazar
    Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: THIS is it kids! From the EISNER and HARVEY award winning, New York Times best-selling Famous Cartoonists-Art Baltazar & Franco! The crossover EPIC event of a lifetime! Finally, CAPTAIN ACTION CAT meets ACTION CAT and the characters from AW YEAH COMICS! There is something EVIL out there and EVIL CAT is determined to find it! Even if it means searching throughout the SILVER AGE to do it! Could this blip on the screen be the one known as DOCTOR EVIL CAT?! We bet it is! What will happen when the SILVER AGE and the AW YEAH AGE collide! What does this mean to the time-stream? The fate of the comic world may change forever! PLUS, a mysterious frozen souvenir from the GOLDEN AGE makes a visit! CAPTAIN ACTION CAT is based on the classic Action-Figure Adventure-toy CAPTAIN ACTION! Also crossing over with DARK HORSE COMICS characters such as GHOST, X, CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT, and THE OCCULTIST, this series promises the typical zaniness that the creators of TINY TITANS are known for. True story.

MATTHEW: C’maaaahn… Of COURSE I’m interested in this.

JKR_DF_DJ_52a0f8257f04a9.38289053JOKER DEATH OF THE FAMILY TP
Writer: Various, John Layman, Peter J. Tomasi, Scott Snyder
Artist: Jason Fabok, Patrick Gleason, Greg Capullo, Various
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $24.99
SOLICITATION: The Joker makes his horrifying return in these tales from BATMAN #17, CATWOMAN #13-14, BATGIRL #14-16, BATMAN AND ROBIN #15-17, NIGHTWING #15-16, DETECTIVE COMICS #16-17, RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #15-16 and TEEN TITANS #15, plus pages from BATMAN #13, BATGIRL #13, NIGHTWING #14, RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #13-14, SUICIDE SQUAD #14-15 and TEEN TITANS #14 and 16.

ROB: I’ve heard this was pretty good. There was way too much for me to pick up at the time, but I’d say it’s gonna be worth checking out now that it’s all together.

    Ms Marvel_3_cover

    MS. MARVEL #3
    Writer: C. Willow Wilson
    Artist: Adrian Alphona
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: The All-New Ms. Marvel has already gained international fame. But in Kamala’s case, star-power comes with a whole lot of… awkwardness. Find out why the most exciting new Marvel hero is also the most lovable!

CHRIS: I’ve still only read the first issue but it left a good enough impression that I’m still buying the title and eager to see where it goes. Love that Marvel is trying new things even though some might not work.

GEORGE: Believe the hype, this is still good. Also, here’s hoping Marvel at least keeps around one or two high profile books priced at the $2.99 price point.

    piggyA PIGGY’S TALE #1
    Writer: Tod Emko
    Artist: Ethan Young
    Publisher: BOHEMIAN PRESS
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION:  After an accident takes his leg, a rescue dog named Piggy discovers he has super-powers, and must fulfill his fate to save other critters from despair. Accompanied by a street smart cat and a girl who can talk to animals, this unlikely hero must stop evil from befalling victims in New York City.

RODRIGO: Contrary to what the title may lead you to believe this is not a story about a pig. It’s also not a story about the dorky kid from Lord of the Flies. It’s actually a story about a super-dog named Piggy. It’s this sort of complexity that draws me to this book.

Red_Hood_and_The_Outlaws_Vol_1-30_Cover-1_TeaserRED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #30
    Writer: Will Pfeifer
    Art by:Rafa Sandoval
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: 2.99
SOLICITATION: Jason and Kori face off against the Agents of S.H.A.D.E. as they embark on a quest to save a kidnapped Roy from his alien abductors!

RODRIGO: Gotta give it to Red Hood and the Outlaws. Making it to #30 is a big achievement for a non-batman book in the New 52.

    redrovercharlieROVER RED CHARLIE
    Writer: Garth Ennis
    Artist: Michael DiPascale
    Publisher: Avatar Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Long gone are the days of treats and dog parks. Rover, Red, and Charlie near the end of their canine odyssey as they discover the trail to their final destiny. As the feeders’ world collapses around them, these three best friends continue to search for the new path in this post-apocalyptic world. And with the very forces of nature seemingly against them, the trio must find a way to the Big Splash. GARTH ENNIS, the master of original horror, has crafted a story that eloquently reveals the best and worst in human nature through the actions of man’s best friend.

GEORGE: This has turned out nicely. Rover Red Charlie is some of Ennis’s finest work in recent memory – a tight narrative with some engaging, non-human voices. DiPascale’s painted art collides with the sometimes disturbing subject matter to great effect. Good stuff here.

Solar01-Cov-Doe-2f637SOLAR, MAN OF THE ATOM #1
    Writer: Frank J. Barbiere
    Artist: Joe Bennet
    Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: ‘This all started with an accident…’ AN ALL-NEW CORNER OF THE GOLD KEY UNIVERSE! Flooded with experimental radiation that grants him unbelievable powers, the brilliant-and-obsessive Dr. Phil Seleski seeks to unlock the secrets of the universe, begrudgingly becoming a ‘hero’ along the way. But can a single man be trusted with near-limitless abilities? What will this mean to the ones he loves? And will his choices lead to utter chaos and destruction? Brilliant writer FRANK BARBIERE (Five Ghosts) and JOE BENNETT present the Man Of The Atom as you’ve NEVER imagined!

MATTHEW: I’m finding some fun stuff in the pages of Magnus, Robot Fight and Turok, Son Of Stone, so I’m willing to give the third Gold Key hero his due. I wish he was still green, though.

Transformers Windblade_coverTRANSFORMERS WINDBLADE #1 DAWN OF THE AUTOBOTS
    Writer: Mairghread Scott
    Artist: Sarah Stone
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: WHO IS WINDBLADE? In the aftermath of DARK CYBERTRON, WINDBLADE takes the planet by storm. But where did she come from-and what does her secret mean to the future of the TRANSFORMERS? A powerful new chapter in the TRANSFORMERS saga begins here!

CHRIS: Other than the fact that it’s Transformers, I’m excited for this because it introduces a new character, and a female one at that. It will be interesting to see the explanation for female Transformer’s existence and what a new writer and artist are bringing to the universe.

ROB: I still need to finish Dark Cybertron, but this Windblade lady looks all sorts of spiffy. I like that we’re getting what looks like an origin and a powerful new character.

    ULTFF2014001-DC11-LR-5f715

    ULTIMATE FF #1
    Writer: Joshua Hale Fialkov
Artist: Mario Guevara, Tom Grummett, Juan Vlasco
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
    SOLICITATION:
    • The Future Foundation is all that stands between us and COMPLETE AND UTTER DOOM.
    • Sue Storm, Tony Stark, Machine Man and Sam Wilson face the ONCOMING DESTRUCTION.
    • A mysterious new member will join their ranks, whether they like it or not. Hint: They will not.

MATTHEW: I don’t like the fact that the first issue has three artists credcited, and this batch of characters is practically guaranteed to be a weird mix, but the idea of Machine Man and The Falcon working together has me curious. Even though I don’t really have any stake in the Ultimate Universe, I’m at least intrigued enough to check it out…

ROB: How does the Ultimate Universe handle the Future Foundation? I like the team line-up and the idea behind this group coming together. Maybe it’s time to pay attention to the Ultimate line again.

whatifWHAT IF: AGE OF ULTRON #3
    Writer: Joseph Keatinge
    Artist: Mico Suayan
    Publisher: Marvel
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: In a world without Thor, the Norse end times of Ragnarök takes the lives of every super-powered being, leaving only the unpowered heroes of the Marvel Universe behind! • Assembled under the leadership of Nick Fury, these powerless Defenders are all that remains to defend the planet from the Midgard Serpent!

RODRIGO: Finally, a book that asks that question that has haunted the Marvel universe for years: “What if Age of Ultron number three?” Are we prepared as readers to find out the answer?
