The “Bowl” in Old King Cole is in reference to drinking. The rhyme is from ancient Britannia and pre-dates not only recreational marijuana use but the use of cups. Beverages of that era were served in shallow bowls. The pipe is in reference of a wind instrument, possibly a flute or similar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_King_Cole
