20th Century Fox announces release dates for three Marvel films

Stephen SchleicherBy Stephen SchleicherMarch 21, 20146 Comments1 Min Read

When know that 20th Century Fox has the rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises, so why are they announcing three movie release dates?

First up, Fox announced that Fantastic Four 2 (the sequel to they yet produced upcoming movie will) is scheduled for July 14, 2017, with another Wolverine flick arriving March 3, 2017.

The big secret is a yet unnamed project scheduled for July 13, 2018.  While Fox is keeping mum on the project, I’m guessing another X-Men flick that follows close on the heals of X-Men: Days of Future Past that arrives May 23, 2014.  Of course it could be a third Fantastic Four movie, but considering the X-Men franchise has been much more lucrative for Fox, my money is on X-Men: Onslaught…

When do the Fox (and indeed Sony) rights expire? The prospect of Wolverine and Spider-Man butting heads with the main MCU is dreamland.

I’m hoping that something like this will come to pass sooner rather than later. I’d love to see the Marvel Cinematic Universe become closer to the Marvel Comics Universe with some crossovers and team-ups we’ve been waiting for but haven’t seen because of different companies holding the rights.

Hopefully the older actors will still be acting to do another X-Men in 3-4 years.
