Major Spoilers Question Of The Day: Those Whom You Once Loved Edition

Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonMarch 14, 20146 Comments2 Mins Read

As a comic-book fan for the better part of 35 years, I’ve seen a lot of change, but few properties (short of the Legion of Super-Heroes) have been through the iterations that have gripped The Batman.  When I began reading comics, Bats was in his mid-30s, ready to adopt his ward and dealing with the likes of Nocturna, The Night-Slayer and Black Mask, in his very first appearance.  Over the ensuring decades, DC has printed literally THOUSANDS of Bat-comics, some of which have been wonderful, and some of which have been All-Star Batman.  Stephen likes to needle me that I hate Batman, but that’s in no way true.  I just have a concept of the Darknight Detective that isn’t always shared by the people writing the books, and I find that I need to pick and choose my Bat-stories to keep my eyes from rolling entirely back into my skull (“Morrison = Probably good, Miller = Run To The Hills.”)  This, in turn, begs today’s Bat-query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) even found some awesome Bat-tales to love in the midst of Knightfall, once you got past some seriously UUUUUUGLY covers, asking: What characters do you love more in their *past* incarnations?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

Aside from the aforementioned LSH, I’d have to go with the late-80’s JLI, a.k.a. the “Bwah-Hah-Hah” League.

I’ve tried several times since, but just haven’t been hooked.

      Pre-nu52 Wonder Woman.
Everything since issue 600–JMS’s Odyssey, Flashpoint, the 52 reboot, & more–has been an unmitigated nightmare with no end in sight.

Not comic related, but most of the cast of Mortal Kombat before the recent MK9 reboot.
They pretty much wrecked every decent character; now Kitana’s a damsel in distress, Raiden’s a complete idiot, Sub-Zero’s a cyborg, Mileena is a sex clown, Kung Lao, Sektor, Ermac…the only characters that haven’t been destroyed are the ones that sucked to begin with.

      Transformers!

I loved the gen1 cartoon and movie. Even the sell more toys comic book, but basically from headmasters on its just been kind of blah for me (to say nothing of the Michael Bay live action stuff)

The Batman, waaaaaay back in the olden days when Grant Morrison was writing him. That was some good stuff. You kids probably don’t remember.. Back then cars cost a dollar, milk came from horses and The Kaiser was making havoc in the old country.
