    MOVIES: Highlander Loses Its One

Rob RasmussenBy Rob RasmussenJune 18, 20137 Comments1 Min Read

Last November, director Carlos Fresnadillo’s left the Highlander reboot. Now, Ryan Reynolds, the man slated to be the new Connor MacLeod, has walked as well. This leaves Summit Entertainment in a bit of a predicament and the Highlander franchise back in pre-production limbo. Of course, this may also help their chances of finding a new director as they will get to make their own choice of star. My take on this, while I’m disappointed that in the loss of Ryan Reynolds, maybe we should go with a lesser known try to carry the film on its own, without the name of the actor.

What are your thoughts? Any suggestions on who Summit should get next?

Ryan Reynolds is great if you’re looking for some comedy, but anything serious? Better look for someone else…

He could play Oscar Schindler in Schindler’s List and still somehow introduce comedy into the role, his Van Wilder persona gets added to pretty much anything he does.

I’m actually relieved. With no offense to Ryan Reynolds, who I’ve enjoyed in other movies, I just never thought he was right for the role.

I just hope they don’t try to go back to the once rumored “younger and edgier semi-Twilight” version that was floating around for a bit.

Personally, I’d shy away from well-known actors for the Connor MacLeod role. Find an unknown who is both charismatic yet able to blend in to a crowd, who can display a great range of expression through their face (in a non Jim Carrey way) and with eyes that seem older than the person they belong to. Come to think of it, that’s also about how I’d want to go about casting The Doctor too.

I would go with the guy from the british hit Being Human, Aiden something or other. great swagger not terribly well known can be fierce, trouble, remorseful, and sincere And deliver a more authentic brogue if they decide to go that route.

Personally, I think they should quit remaking old movies and television shows and do something original. Sure, every now and then you get a gem like the Star Trek reboot, but for the most part, remakes and sequels aren’t worth the cost of the match it would take to set them on fire. Grump, grump, grump.

To be fair, they did sort of fizzle out the franchise with two, and the 5th season I think, the one where Richie died.

As long as they don’t try to remake the original film, and just keep the main ideas, Kurgan, Ramirez, and throw in a cameo of the Silvercup sign, I would be okay with it.

As for who to star? How about an actual scottish actor: James McAvoy.

Personally I thought the TV series was decent all the way til the end, it was just most of the movies themselves after the first that were terrible. The only exception is I enjoyed “Highlander: Endgame” (although I hated the death of Connor). But Highlander 2, 3 and The Source were all just so awful.

Ideally, though, I’d prefer less of a remake and more of another viewpoint in the franchise. Don’t stick to the MacLeod line and focus on some completely different Immortal. Then it wouldn’t be a reboot and it would be a fresh opening for people who have never seen the rest of the franchise.
