Major Spoilers Question Of The Day: ‘Don’t Know M’Own Strength’ Edition

    Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonJanuary 3, 2013Updated:January 3, 20137 Comments1 Min Read

While the business of gift-giving is over for a while, it’s still worth ruminating on the subject of the surprise.  Sometimes, the unknown is pleasant and unexpected, other times it’s jury duty on your birthday (not that I’m bitter or anything.)  Whether you believe in resolutions or not, the thought of a new year stretching out before us is an exhilarating and terrifying one all at once, and it makes you wonder what could be around the corner…  Will it be the lady, the tiger, or Honey Boo Boo acting the fool?  Hell if I know, but man, it’s fun to wonder.

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) can be cryptic when necessary, just ask Sergeant Boudreaux, asking:  What do you think Major Spoilers has up our collective sleeves in ’13?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

Maybe some more audio “shorts?” (For you guys, I mean) I’ve really been enjoying the Dueling Reviews. Other Comics and Pop Culture related 20-30 minute podcasts would be welcome in my podcast feed from you guys. Any combination of the Critical Hit guys doing short discussions on gameplay mechanics, other rpg’s or fun stories of things that have happened during their games would be excellent.

Stephen has talked many times about his initial show idea being ripped off by Comic Book Men. Maybe we will see a Major Spoilers you tube channel with various video content.

I’d love to see several changes/additions:

The addition of a segment or new show focused on Tabletop and/or RPG games, perhaps hosted by Rodrigo, with Rob &/or Zach and Stephen. Munchkin Land is tremendous, but I’d love to see you guys tackle some of the other game lines more regularly. Reviews, news and tips/discussions on games would be great.

The addition of a more regular segment to Major Spoilers on TV and Movies. You already address them in passing but I’d love to see that as a regular segment on each show.

An expansion of the new segments. Typically you only hit a single news story per show, but there have been weeks where there were several stories I would have loved to get your commentary on.

During the past year you added a 4th chair to the flagship podcast. Zach (& Rob before) him have added a great fresh perspective. I don’t think I saw any real announcement on your reasoning for adding the 4th person, but if this is still officially an experiment, you should absolutely make it permanent.

I’d love to see a regular guests, perhaps to the weekend show, even if only for one segment. You occasionally have industry guests, but even other commentators would be great. I know Stephen is a regular on Comic Dorks!, but I’d love to see you have Scott Johnson, or one of the other Nerdtacular regulars drop in for a weekend show.

More regular letters or Q&A segments.

In short, I’d love to see Major Spoilers become an entire network of Podcasts a la TWIT or Geeks and Sundry.

I would hope for short forays into other RPGs to give us a feel for what else is out there. I.E., 3-4 episodes on the new Star Wars RPG or Dresden Files RPG, etc.

I’ve also really enjoyed the more academic/literary comic and movie discussions, so more of that would be welcome. Related to that: more emphasis on graphic novels and indie comics (i.e., stuff outside the classic superhero genres) would be good too.
