MOVIES: Marvel may extend Daredevil deadline to get Fantastic Four characters

Stephen SchleicherBy Stephen SchleicherAugust 7, 20122 Comments2 Mins Read

A couple of weeks ago, we told you that 20th Century Fox was running the risk of losing the Daredevil property due to the director ditching the movie at the last minute.  There’s a new twist in the tale, that may have Marvel giving Daredevil a pass in order to get bigger characters.

It’s all just talk right now, but Marvel/Disney may allow Fox to extend the rights to the Daredevil property in exchange for characters that have appeared in the Fantastic Four universe.  Other sites have said that Marvel/Disney wants the Fantastic Four, and that would be great if it were true, but instead of trying to make a play for Sue, Reed, Johnny, and that other guy… you know… rock head… the studio really wants to get their hands on Galactus and Silver Surfer (and quite possibly a few more characters).  Considering The Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy are about to universal (but not Universal), it makes sense to try and snag these characters now.

20th Century Fox isn’t a bunch of dopes, so when talks resume later this week, don’t think for a minute that the Fantastic Four are going to be a bargaining tool in order for the studio to keep the Daredevil.  Fox already has Josh Trank on board for that reboot, and the studio isn’t going to part with that franchise so easily.

And why would Marvel/Disney give up the Daredevil?  According to Variety, the new Daredevil movie wants to go dark and deep by adapting Frank Miller’s 1970’s take on the character.

I’d much rather see the FF and their “universe” (um….wait…haven’t the Avengers met the Surfer already? This is why I get tired of having to put quotation marks around stuff…) done by the Disney/Marvel group. Matt Murdoch is too gritty a character for what Marvel wants to put out, which is a gestalt of 1960’s Stan Lee and the current Ultimates version of characters. Daredevil needs to be done in the vein of the most recent Dark Knight movies since that was Miller’s type of noir as well. Plus, the last movie completely missed the character of The Kingpin and his interaction with Murdoch.

I think Disney/Marvel could make a great Daredevil movie, but I would rather see them get all the FT characters back.
