I thought Spongebob Squarepants died out as something popular years ago, but my son’s non-stop Netflix marathon of the show, and the upcoming It’s a Spongebob Christmas suggest otherwise.

i almost hate to say this, but Spongebob seems to have transended fad and is approaching full on icon status. Case in point not only has the show been attacked by a major conservative political organization (Focus on the Family), claimed by reserchers to cause pre-school age kids to have temporaty lowered mental function (UVa reserch published in the journal of Pediatrics), but Metallica put the shows characters on a t-shirt with them …. Icon.
