So many questions on those solicits.

John Constantine in a mainstream DC book? What’s with all the reprints…particularly of LOTDK issues (I’m sure Stephen will be excited, but still…)?

And this may be a function of my own ignorance, but what’s with the ratings? Do they always rate T or T+?

Quote: “As Bruce digs deeper into the mystery of the recent owl murders, he soon finds himself face to face with a shocking enemy – an enemy the Wayne family has secretly been at war with for centuries. Be there for the first shots of the war for the soul of Gotham City. Friends will become deadly enemies and secrets will be revealed – revelations that will change the Bat-family forever.”

What a load of crap. The Bat-family is three issues old post-reboot; how can something that has 96 pages of continuity be changed forever?

      Fail!

I am going to use Wikipedia to answer this question in a moment, so don’t worry… But I’m still pressed to ask, “Voodoo? Who?” Also, I thought Jamie Reyes was already “newly-bonded with his armor”, like, 3 years ago… after Infinite Crisis? Are they just ‘retelling’ the stories that I read in the issues of the last Beetle-book? Or is this continuity going to negate the last continuity? Or.. *sigh* I’m trying really hard to be excited about this “jumping on point”, but it’s also turning out to be quite a “throwing away point”. I’m not sure I’ll like what’s been discarded, in some cases. Chris pretty much nailed it: “So many questions”…

Wiki tells me _nothing_ about this “Voodoo” person, so…. Who? Is she new? I even checked Ron Marz’s page, since the solicit says she’s his own character, and there’s nothing there about a “Voodoo”. Is she from the Grifter/StormwatchVerse?

… Oh god no. I remember the WILDcats (or however it’s typographed) from that gawd-awful saturday morning cartoon. (I’m totally not into ‘daemonites’ and ‘kherubims’.) I -KNOW- the comic book is probably a bajillion times better (you don’t even have to convince me of that), but.. I’m not sure about this universe integration thing… It barely worked for the Charleston characters, and it seems not to have worked for the Milestone (except Static Shock, and that even took a while) & Red Circle characters. Is the audience for the Wildstormverse going to like what the New DCU is doing to their favorite characters, etc etc etc.?

How has it barely worked for the Charlton properties? Blue Beetle, Captain Atom and The Question are pretty much as well known as DC’s regular second tier of heroes, and even Thunderbolt has headlined his own book.

Yes, and where did Judomaster & Nightshade end up? Minor characters. The Beetle’s first book lasted twenty-something issues, and if not for Giffen’s BwahahaLA, he probably would have languished in obscurity. Captain Atom’s been Monarch, then sent into Stormwatchverse and blowed up to cause an apocalypse, time travelled a bunch, etc etc etc. The characters have been in use, yes… that doesn’t mean “it’s worked well”. :) Oh, and don’t even get me started on Ted Kord being shot in the effing face. The Question died of lung cancer, and Renee Montoya hasn’t lit the world afire since taking up the mask. These don’t sound ‘second tier’ anymore, unless said tier is six feet underground. Your mileage may vary, apparently, but the integration of the Charlestonverse into the DCU came with a LOT of minor (sometimes major) character “fixes” (Captain Atom’s multicolored look, anybody?) required so that they’d gain what little traction they had. And all this is coming from somebody who LIKES the Blue Teddle, The Question v1.0, etc. They got to shine occasionally, but it wasn’t ‘easy’ to fit them in. For example, how do daemonites/kherubim fit in the DCU? Weren’t they key concepts behind the empowering of the Wildstorm heroes (or at least the ‘C.A.T.S.)? So are they going to have bits retconned? What if one artist things Character X needs to get a haircut? etc. It’s shoehorning, most of the time. The Charleston characters are the most successful recent example (that I can think of), and even that ‘success’ isn’t overflowing any cups. :)

And the Marvelization of the DC universe continues unabated. Watch as Stormwatch battles the same threat the Authority battled in their first solo tale. Marvel at how people can hate Superman because of the old “shocking secret” premise. Either he’s gay (not that there’s anything wrong with it…) or he got his powers from the bite of a radioactive kryptonian superhero or he’s not really Superman, he’s a clone. And let’s not even touch the absurdity that are the Batman titles. When’s Bat-gen coming out? Or X-Bat? Bat-Force? Cyberbat? Batman 2099? Oh wait…they’ve done that already. Blackhawks looks nice. I really like G.I. Joe. I only hope the Blackhawks have a better movie. And I’ll make a few wild predictions – The reason Hera gets all bent out of shape against Wonder Woman is because we find out Zeus is her father and I, Vampire becomes the second casualty of the relaunch. My respect for DC having been mercilessly killed off first. Maybe they’ll resurrect that in the next relaunch, Final Crisis of Infinitely Falling Sales. But hey…the kids like it and it’s got a nice beat you can dance to…so I could be wrong…

It’s interesting to me that just as one person mentions the “marvelization of the DCU”, a Marvel reader says he’s dropping some Marvel books for DC titles… This either bears out the theory posited, or completely negates it. I’m just not sure which. ^_^ I.e., is “the marvel way” a specific style of storytelling, whereas “the dc path” is a uniquely different comic-book presentation? Maybe I’m just getting too philosophical, or maybe I’m just bored. :D
