DIGITAL COMICS: Blacklist Studios wins best comic prize in first annual digital innovation awards

    Press Release

On Monday, January 24, attendees of the 2011 Digital Book World conference gathered to witness the first annual Digital Innovation Awards. The conference chose the awards as its opening ceremonies event to honor creative endeavors in the field of digital publishing. Among the categories honored were Fiction, Non-Fiction, Reference, Children’s Literature and Comics.

Blacklist Studios’ top-selling digital comic series, “R-13” took first place in the Comics field that included “Tumor” from Archaia and “Operation Ajax” from Tall Chair, Inc. “R-13” was released digitally by Robot Media as an APP for Android and iPhone platforms. “R-13” reached 200,000 plus downloads within a few weeks. The Comics award was one of two that Robot Media were nominated for.

“Robot 13 allowed us to explore the unique storytelling possibilities of mobile devices and create a marriage of content and experience that has become the comics breakthrough of 2010. We are honored to be a part of it,” said Robot Media founder Hermes Pique.

The Digital Book World conference was organized by F+W Media, publishers of magazines, books and digital content and owner-operators of trade show exhibitions.
As David Nussbaum, Chairman & CEO Chairman & CEO of F+W Media explained on the official Digital Book World website, “Our winners, and all our finalists, have produced some of the most creative work taking place today in our industry,. It’s our pleasure to honor these companies and individuals and doubly exciting having the opportunity to do so at an event like Digital Book World, with more than a thousand of their peers in attendance.”

This is the first award for Robot 13 co-creators and Blacklist Studios co-owners Thomas Hall and Daniel Bradford. “R-13,” the story of a skull-headed robot with an irresistible instinct to battle mythological creatures has met with international acclaim since the release of its first issue in 2009.

“Daniel and I strive to make our comics as good and entertaining as possible. We are humbled by the attention Robot 13 has received and thankful to the Digital Book Awards for recognizing our efforts,” said writer Hall.

“As Robot 13 is a labor of love, the Digital Book Awards is a true honor,” added artist Bradford. “It is exhilarating to see your creations come to life, especially in an exciting digital format. We are grateful for all those that helped along the way.”

“R-13” is released in both digital and print formats by Blacklist Studios. The digital APP version can be ordered in a digital edition from Robot Comics (www.robotcomics.net) for iPhone, iPod and Android mobiles. The introductory issue is free with subsequent issues priced at $0.99 each. The print edition of “R-13” can be ordered directly from Blacklist Studios (www.blackliststudios.com).
