RUMOR: Darren Aronofsky to direct Superman flick?

Stephen SchleicherBy Stephen SchleicherSeptember 28, 201012 Comments1 Min Read

Last week, we made you aware of the rumor that Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas were narrowing their list of directors for the upcoming Superman movie to a select few. Over the weekend, several sites started posting that one name was left off the list – Fountain director Darren Aronofsky.

Like Zack Snyder, Aronofsky has a unique look to his films (Pi is one of my favorites), and The Wrestler and Black Swan have been very well received. But is he the right director for a Superman film? In the case of this rumor, I’m going to say – no. Aronofsky and Hugh Jackman are good friends, and I hear he is in the running for Wolverine 2. Scheduling conflicts and cross company rivalry may put him out of the running if he prefers to work on Wolverine.

Is this the new trend? Superman Returns fought over getting Cyclops for X3 so this movie is naturally going to fight over this director with Wolvie 2.

Terrible, terrible idea. Remember Aronofsky’s plan for Batman: Year One? Jive talking mechanic Alfred and excrement-capsule throwing Batman and a dropped-off-the-face-of-the-Earth Bruce Wayne. His Superman would probably just be some steriod junky who escapes from a mental institution. There is a good reason his name was left off the list.

Sorry, I don’t usually rant but this is just the worst idea ever.

You seem to be confusing the jobs of “Script Writer” and “Director”.

Kind of like how Chris Nolan was the director of Begins and TDK but didn’t lend any ideas to the story?

Yeah. Why does this guy’s name pop up whenever there’s a director rumor around a DC movie?

I’d love to have someone like Aronofsky come in with some crazy ideas, as long as it’s not Nic Cage in a black and silver Edward Scissorhands suit. I for one am sick of the masturbatory adaptation of the comics to film. We get it you love DKR. We get it you love Richard Donner’s take on Superman. Do your own thing. It’s in the same vein as what those at DC are currently doing, “The Flash was better when it was Barry Allen”, “Nobody but Hal”. THE FOUNTAIN was one the best movies I have ever seen, get Aronofsky behind something and you will get goodness. I have not been disappointed by him yet.

Well he would just be the director right? not the writer and christopher nolan would be the overaching Don

Directing wise, Darren is a good director, my hopes are on Zack Snyder though, he is great visually and superman = hope, we need incredibly direction and visionary to portray that feeling.

I have been saying this for a while now. I think he’s better than anyone on that list. I would stay far away from a Zack Snyder Superman movie.

Directors sometimes can’t keep their hands off a script when directing. Not a good choice.

He can’t do worse than Bryan Singer.
