I enjoyed the Little Sister of Eluria novella, it’s something I really kind of liked about Stephen King and his Dark Tower series. He would release a short companion piece in a collection of short stories that was collected with a bunch of other writers that you didn’t have to read to understand the rest of the 7 books of the series but it just helped to flesh out the world the characters were living in. Then again, I’ve been a fan of Stephen King since I ran across his book Eyes of the Dragon when I was much younger and I read every single Dark Tower book as soon as they came out.
