Sgt. Rock movie moving ahead…to the FUTURE!

Stephen SchleicherBy Stephen SchleicherNovember 10, 20092 Comments1 Min Read

Fans of the World War II hero Sgt. Rock, may want to divert your eyes now.  DC Comics, Joel Silver, Francis Lawrence and Chad St. John are taking the story and moving it into the future.

“Inglourious Basterds” notwithstanding, period war movies have not been in vogue in Hollywood for years, unless it was a more serious contemplation of the subject like “Saving Private Ryan.” Also, American jingoism went out of style after 9/11; even this summer’s G.I. Joe movie dropped the toy’s “A Real American Hero” tagline and made the action team internationally focused.

There’s some good reasoning behind moving the story to “the future”, although there’s no word if that future is modern day, or the future future, where our Robot Overlords have risen up to enslave humanity.

I guess WB liked the Jonah Hex in the future storyline, realized they already had a Jonah Hex film in production and realized the next best thing would be subbing Sgt Rock with Jonah Hex.

DC has a such a rich tapestry of characters, if WB wanted a war movie taking place in the “future”, there are a number of different characters to use. Were the Atomic Knights booked?

I vote for future future, but there must be lazer guns. I also vote for having Sgt Rock removed from WW2 and put in the future.
