    Marvel headed to the PSP

Sony has announced a new feature for PSP owners – comic books!

At gamescom in Cologne, Germany, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announced the digital reader for PSPTM (PlayStation®Portable), a new service that will allow PSP owners to access a range of media on their PSP. The digital reader service will be launched with Digital Comics this December, putting PSP owners in control of a huge library of Digital Comics from several provider partners including—you guessed it,  Marvel!

The Digital Comics service will allow owners to download select titles, which you can then read page by page or frame by frame.

“PSP’s new digital reader offers an unprecedented consumer experience that will extend the world of Marvel from print pages into the hands of fans around the world. We are excited to be part of this launch,” said Ira Rubenstein, executive vice president, global digital media group, Marvel Entertainment.

It’s interesting that Marvel decided to jump on the PSP bandwagon for the next stage of digital comics.  On the one hand the screen for the PSP is much larger than what Apple is offering up with its iPhone, but on the other hand, one wonders how many people have a PSP?  I still have one, but its been ages since it’s been turned on, and I’m not even sure i know where the damn thing is.

What say you Major Spoilerites?  Is Marvel Digital Comics on PSP a good thing or a bad one?

I use my PSP eveyday, but usually not for gaming. I stream some internet radio through it around the house and have a few movies on it.

I will definatly be trying the comics on it, but I am curious of how they will implement it? Just another storefront on their existing system, or something a little different.

I find it interesting that they went to the PSP & iTunes with their motion comics. Will this push other publishers (I’m looking at you DC) into getting on the PSP or console bandwagon?

I would guess that this is just the start for Marvel. The PSP does seem well suited but people aren’t going to buy one just to read comics. I have checked out digital comics on the iPhone and some do it pretty well. It’s only a matter of time until the big 2 jump onto the iPhone and other smartphones.

I don’t own a PSP, but I just don’t see the mentality of sticking to just the PSP for a comic book format. After all, if you want to appeal the Digital Comics to gamers, you put it on the PSP, if you want it to appeal to everyone, you put it on the iPhone.

I want them in iTunes. (legal) Comics from the big two in an iPhone is my dream.

I had forgotten that the PSP even existed…
