Art Appreciation Moment of the Day: Evan Shaner

Stephen SchleicherBy Stephen SchleicherAugust 5, 20091 Comment1 Min Read

Evan’s been featured as an Art Appreciation Moment artist, and following the trail from yesterday, finds Evan once again making an appearance on Major Spoilers.  Check out his take on the Parker character.

Here’s a faux cover for Richard Stark’s The Hunter, the first of the Parker novels. I’ve been meaning to do something like this for a while now, high on my list. Great character, great series. Eventually I’d like to do one of these for as many of the books as I can.

That’s Lynn and Mal Resnick behind him by the way, just in case.

From a technical standpoint, it seems to have some basic anatomical problems. Mostly, eyes are not spaced correctly and all of the characters look like victims of inferior bone surgery.

Even so, I kind of like it. The style has a comic strip/noir look that distinguished it. If it were drawn in the 40s I’d be kind of meh about it. But as it is, it works in that it sets itself apart.

It’s not the kind of art I enjoy in my comics. But if it were a quick sketch piece it’s okay.
