    SDCC’09: Archie Comic Roundup

Stephen SchleicherBy Stephen SchleicherJuly 23, 20092 Comments2 Mins Read

Here’s our Rapid-Fire Rundown of the announcements made by Archie Comics on the first day of the San Diego Comic Con gathered from throughout the Intardwebz.

    • Archie announces Archie Digital Comics (www.archiedigital.com).  The company said readers can get hundreds of Archie titles from the past and present. $9.95 a month or a full year for $49.95.
    • These will be available through the Apple iTunes store.
    • This is not the last announcement about digital comics distribution we will hear from the show.
    • Surprisingly, there was a line around the corner to get into the Archie Panel.  Most were probably there for news on Archie #600 that features Archie marrying Veronica. The good news? The story takes place five years in the future.
    • Michael Uslan is writing the story.
    • According to CEO Jon Goldwater, there are still plenty of Archie stories to be told.
    • The Archie website is getting a much needed overhaul in September.  Probably to support Archie Digital Comics (ADC).
    • Archie is opening an international artist in India.  Who knew Archie Comics were that big in India?  Really.
    • Want more Archies and Josie and the Pussy Cats music?  Of course you do, and your demands will be answered in the coming months.
    • There was discussion over IDW Publishing’s new Archie collection that will feature many strips never before seen in public.
    • If you hate the “New Look” Archie Comics, the company is ending that artistic design style following the upcoming Reggie storyline.

More news from the convention as it floats through our in-box.

Regarding the Archie Digital Comics pricing – So is this like the Marvel Digital, where you essentially get to rent them? I mean can you download and keep all you want for $9.95 a month, or will some sort of DRM kick in at a point?

Archie is big all over the world. I have found Archies in gas stations, Wal-Marts and Krogers all over the South. Katie reads all the Double Digest, and we pas them on to younger family members. I have even brought some up here to the office I work at to sit in the waiting room since a lot of kids have been coming in with their parents and grandparents during the summer break.

I can understand the push for the music, it has become part of the Archie identity, but you almost hate to see how it will be implemented.

Looking forward to the IDW collections! Hopefully they will contain the original dialogue and not me changed to modernize it like the digests do.

The new look stuff has not been to bad. Predictable, but not bad. I did not hate them, but I won’t be sorry to see them go.

WE NEED REPRINTS (DIGESTS, DIGITAL, HARDBACKS, SOMETHING!) of the MLJ/RED CIRCLE/ ARCHIE ADVENTURE SERIES stories! Come on!

It’s really a bummer that no more new look stories will be published. I liked them A LOT. They were great!
